[opensuse] installation, clickable world map for timezone - how big can Liechtenstein be?
Certainly not a bug, perhaps a slight nuisance, but really just funny - when I use the graphical YaST during installation, and I get the world map for selecting a timezone, in 9 cases out of 10, on the first try I manage to put the mouse over Liechtenstein. Fiddling a little I manage to move to Switzerland. The area of Liechtenstein is only about 160km2. The neighbouring countries - Switzerland is 41000km2, Austria is 84000km2, Germany is 357000km2. So, out of a total of 480000km2, virtually every time, I manage to put the mouse over the 160km2 of Liechtenstein, an area of about 0.01% of the total. :-) Surely the click-map is a little wrong .... -- Per Jessen, Zürich (8.6°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - your free DNS host, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

:-) It would be nice if a little geolocation could be done in advance :-) Normally the map starts with somewhere over USA selected. Quite far from "here". -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)

I think I proposed the same a while back, can't remember when. It would be very easy to do - access http://geo.jessen.ch to get the countrycode for your IPv4-address.
Normally the map starts with somewhere over USA selected.
It depends on which language you pick. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (10.1°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Regarding time zone setting, I think Ubuntu's installer is an example to be followed. Like openSUSE's, it shows a map where the user can click to select its time zone. Also, like openSUSE's, it suggests the user time zone. But the suggestion given by Ubuntu's installer seems to be based on geolocation, as that how to says:
Select your location
If you are connected to the internet, this should be done automatically. Check your location is correct and click ’Forward’ to proceed. If you’re unsure of your time zone, type the name of the town you’re in or click on the map and we’ll help you find it.
https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/install-ubuntu-desktop Also, the text field it offers for users to change location accepts any city the user types in. For instance, I typed "Pelotas" and it even showed me a dropdown correctly suggesting the city I live (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). Note, however, that there's no "Pelotas time", but the installer knew somehow that here we use Brasilia (Brazil's capital) time, as well as DST. If I typed, for instance, Salvador, maybe the installer would not apply DST (in Salvador, they use Brasilia time, but not DST). Ubuntu's installer seems to heavily use Internet to help users set their time zone. I did not test it offline, though. Maybe we could use some of the Ubuntu installer's ideas to improve openSUSE's installer. Yes, I think I remember the issue popping up now and then.

Sure? Might be, I typically pick US English. I'll have to try next time. -- Saludos/Cheers, Carlos E.R. (Minas-Morgul - W10) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
