[opensuse] timeout error messages for DVD drive w/o DVD -- consequences?
Hi, I got regular error messages in syslog, as in: Feb 26 08:14:18 puma kernel: ata5.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xa0) Feb 26 08:14:18 puma kernel: ata5.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen Feb 26 08:14:18 puma kernel: ata5.00: irq_stat 0x40000001 Feb 26 08:14:18 puma kernel: ata5.00: cmd a0/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 tag 0 Feb 26 08:14:18 puma kernel: cdb 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Feb 26 08:14:18 puma kernel: res 51/20:03:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 Emask 0x5 (timeout) Feb 26 08:14:18 puma kernel: ata5.00: status: { DRDY ERR } Feb 26 08:14:18 puma kernel: ata5: hard resetting link Feb 26 08:14:18 puma kernel: ata5: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300) Feb 26 08:14:18 puma kernel: ata5.00: configured for UDMA/33 Feb 26 08:14:18 puma kernel: ata5: EH complete The device in question is my DVD drive: <6>ata5: SATA max UDMA/133 abar m2048@0xe0526000 port 0xe0526200 irq 218 <6>ata5: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300) <6>ata5.00: ATAPI: Optiarc DVD-ROM DDU1671S, 1.11, max UDMA/33, ATAPI AN <6>ata5.00: applying bridge limits <6>ata5.00: configured for UDMA/33 There is no DVD inserted in the drive at the time of these messages. Do these timeout messages somehow influence the access to other SATA devices? Particularly, I have two SATA 750GB disks in this workstation, are they handled independently? I assume that the timeout messages are caused by ivman that I use for automatic mounts of DVDs and USB sticks. (I use neither GNOME nor KDE as a desktop environment.) Any recommendations for an other volume manager that does not cause such timeouts? Any hints for other root causes of the error messages, where could I look at? Or should I simply ignore the error messages? I hope that somebody has some information or ideas for me, TIA. :-) Joachim PS: This is on openSUSE 11.1 32bit, w/ all patches, in case it matters. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Joachim Schrod Email: jschrod@acm.org Roedermark, Germany -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Joachim, FYI my new laptop shipped from the factory with obsolete & 'cranky' firmware in the DVD/CD-RW drive. It's not the same manufacturer or drive as your's but this possibility deserves to be looked at. As stated on this page, you should check for updated drivers (lol) and firmware at your system manufacturer's site, first. http://www.sony-optiarc.us/en/support-service/downloads/fw_cd-writer-dv-seri... You might also try changing out the data cable as "max UDMA/33" means it's negotiating the slowest available supported bus speed. Good luck!
