Updating a live machine.
Hello all. If I update my machine using yast and a locel DVD from 9.0 to 9.1, should this work? The update/upgrade bombed out on only one rpm, filesystem. Bit of a difficult one there as I'm fairly sure my install would need filesystem :-) Qusetion is, should I have booted from the DVD and done an upgrade? If so, why did yast let me try? Dave.

I've upgraded several machines from both 8.2 and 9.0 to 9.1, so yes it works. There are a few gotchas, especially going from 8.2 with the older rpm3, and you may need to edit /var/adm/YaST/ProdDB/prod_00000001 to reflect the new version. Also, when you reboot to the new kernel, check the installed packages to make sure everything got updated. rpm -qa --qf "%{Name} %{Distribution}\n"|grep -v 9.1 should tell you all packages that the upgrade missed The failed RPM is not because you updated "in place", others have reported similar problems in regular "boot from the CD" upgrades. However, since you still haven't rebooted and you still have a running system, you have the opportunity to mount the CD and install the package manually (or possibly downloading it from the ftp site, in case there is a read error on the DVD)
