As Martin said this has come up a few times this month. Check out the past messages at http://lists2.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/ I believe people were having good luck with all Epson models except for the Perfection 1250 which is not supported. If you have good 42bit or higher scanner working through Sane and Gimp love to hear about it. Trying to save myself from buying the wrong one making me move back to windows, save me!!

I think that this is the second time this week that this question as been asked. Check out http://www.mostang.com/sane/ and http://www.mostang.com/sane/sane-backends.html. Epson seems to be a popular choice nowadays since the SANE backend is stable and well supported.
