Hello, Is there an app that will play a DVD video that I have ?
Xine. It's on the CDs, in gra, I believe. I don't know if SuSE includes what's necessary to watch encrypted DVDs, but I haven't looked.

It should work out of the box. :) ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? To watch DVDs, you'll need to write your own decryption module. You may find the all the information to do this on the internet, but beware that there are legal issues in doing this and you risk confrontation from MPAA regarding DMCA. I use xine to watch SVCDs & VCDs and it's been a wonderful tool. If your video card does MPEG decoding, there may be some optimizations available to use the MPEG2 decoder onboard opposed to software decoding (which can be slow, choppy, or out=of-sync) to view the video. I would also look at for lindvd in a search engine because I believe they produce a "legal" playeer that doesn't piss off the big-wigs at the MPAA. Hope this helps. Jonathan

You're not a very good listener, are you? ;) This is the entire point of having binary distributions, such as RPMs...somebody has already done the compiling work *FOR* you. Try what came with SuSE, then let us know what happens. ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? As a matter of fact Iam a very good listener. I did a search of the archive I keep of mail and there was some discussion of xine a while back - a discussion I ignored at the time since I had no DVD player. I tried the Suse distro version and it did squat. In the mail someone had been pointed at the xine site. I tried the latest version of the software from that site and it works up to a certain point where it crashes. The next open-source thing to do is to compile your own sources, this is the point of open source btw, in case you have missed that subtlety. -- Regards Cliff

That was a bit of a joke. :)

What do you mean by "did squat"? Unlike SuSEhilf, which is as it has always been, Xine is an application that is supposed to do something slightly more than squat.

Xine is a bit finicky, which is why I guide people to the RPMs. Sometimes debugging a problem with an installed RPM is easier than walking somebody through configuration from source; sometimes it is not. I'm leaning towards the former in this case. Does it send anything to stderr?
The next open-source thing to do is to compile your own sources, this is the point of open source btw, in case you have missed that subtlety.
I'm highly tempted to make a remark about my own inexperience, but you seem to take jokes about like a hot poker in the eye. Currently, my DVD-ROM drive is OOS, so I can't do much helping directly, but from the other reports, there are other people on this list that have used Xine from SuSE with great success. ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I usually use xine, which does a good job, on the whole. 0.9.2 compiled and ran for me without any problems. the dvdnav modules, on the other hand, leaves a lot to be desired. Yesterday I tried ogle, which previously had some problems with audio/video syncing, but the 0.8.0 version played beautifully. It also handles menus flawlessly, as far as my humble testing goes. If you use KDE you may find the panel on top of the video image, but I know you don't, so there's one problem gone :) regards Anders On Wednesday 17 October 2001 20.44, Cliff Sarginson wrote:

Yes, before it crashes on me (the binary RPM that is) I did notice the audio/video is not in sync. Ogle ? Will give it a peek this evening. Thanks ! -- Regards Cliff

There are unsupported links at xine.sourceforge.net/index.php for Xine plugins that allow you to play encrypted dvd's. Also if you do a search for "dvd player" at freshmeat.net you will see a list of a bunch of different dvd players. PCHintz

Well, I am not sure who MPAA/DMCA are..but since the DVD plays on my Win98 system I am sure it must be legal here in Holland..after all we know Billy would never break the law don't we :)

Ok, thanks for the info. -- Regards Cliff
I found this to be the best application for DVD playback. XLC see http://www.videolan.org/ for the scoop. /Dee
