Hi All, I just installed SuSE 9 on this DELL 4600 with an integrated sound card (Intel Corp. 82801EB AC'97 Audio). I have no sound though. I also installed Mandrake 9.2 on the same system and it works perfectly there. Any ideas why it does not work here? Is there some config file I can look ar in Mandrake and copy it here? Thanks Russ

Hi Russ, Interesting as sound is an ofter problem with on-board hardware. What modules are loaded when you boot ? Have you tried going into YaST2 and re-setting your card ? Have you tried opening up kMix and turning up the volume yet ? Dee

I have just updated my kernel to 2.4.18 (I know, so yesterday) and had to reinstall alsa. I then had to go ionto kmix to raise the volume - not just the output volume but also the PCM, whatever that is. So the suggestion to try kmix sounds good (pun intended). I had a no-sound problem and I solved it by running alsaconf as root. Paul Abrahams
I fixed mine by going into YaST2 and adjusting the volume for "suround". Well, it is sorta fixed. Nothing else will adjust the sound (not even the little blue speaker) except for "suround". But I went and reinstalled it anyway, we'll see if that will fix it again when I finally get it running again. Russ ----- Original Message -----

Dee, I had similar problem, I use xmms to play mp3 files from HD with no problem but when I tried music cd there was no sound. Xmms was set correctly as the only thing I had to do was kick in kmix and adjust some things there and voila, sound was back :), the only hassle is that I have to use kmix & fn+PgUp/PgDn to adjust volume. I still don't understand why it was ok for mp3 files without any adjustment but not good enough for music cd. Any comment appreciated. Martin __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I'm going crazy trying to get my CD player to make sound. MP3s work fine. The bad part is, I solved this several years ago, but after a fresh install I don't remember how I fixed it. Kmix doesn't seem to help. -- Jim Sabatke Hire Me!! - See my resume at http://my.execpc.com/~jsabatke Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup.
Hmm... Make sure that the CDROM drive's audio cable is plugged into the sound card. That could definitely cause the problem. Sam On Friday 26 December 2003 18:31, Jim Sabatke wrote:

Does it look like it is playing but makes no sound? The most likely thing is that you do not have a wire from your CD player to your sound card. I got around that by installing a cdread plugin for xmms. Was that what you did last time? An alternative explanation is that you have the CD mixer turned right down in kmix? I have several machines with integrated sound 'cards', and I have to manually enter the irq and related info in YaST for each one before the card will work. Dylan -- Sweet moderation Heart of this nation Desert us not We are between the wars - Billy Bragg
