Wow. Lots of complex questions. I can only speak from my own experience, but my comments are inline :). On Fri, Jun 09, 2000 at 03:12:40PM -0500, Jim Worrest wrote:
Since I plan to use DOSEMU on all of my Linux machines--I even have one that is now pure Linux--I would wonder about the advisabity of using Windows 95/98 DOS? Unlike Windows 3.1x which set on the DOS operating system, somewhat similar to what the GUI's of Linux do on the Command line structure of Linux, I thought Windows 9x DOS was just a subordinate part of Windows? I would wonder if it is even a complete DOS?
Yes, the DOS that comes with Windows98SE is indeed a complete DOS. It includs extensions like SmartDrive (which you can't use under DOSEmu ;), full FDISK, memory management, and everyone's favorite text editor, EDIT (not), among other things. The DOS that comes with Win98 is a much more complete DOS than the original release of MS-DOS 6.0.
Why not use Open-DOS that formerly came from Caldera? Or
Open-DOS (or whatever it's called this week) is a formidable competitor to the DOS from Win98. Some would say it's better. I know for a fact that it can operate in SVGA mode (MS-DOS can't), and it has/had even more tools than Win98 comes with. Availability is scarce, though. On top of that, last I checked, there were still per-seat licensing issues when it's used in commercial environments. Win98 would probably *technically* have these same restrictions, but that's up to your organization to follow, isn't it?
FreeDos which SuSE supports? Open-DOS have a large help file, which you aren't going to find with other DOS's and it a Free-DOS were built to work with Linux.
FreeDOS sucks. That's all I have to say about that. Debian's default DOSEmu disk image uses FreeDOS, and it has nearly 1/3 of the functionality that Old Skool (tm) DOS power users like myself are used to. I've never tried to actually do *work* on this system, but that's a personal problem of mine, and not your concern. One man's garbage is another man's treasure, so try it out. What's there to lose? Time?
If not those I would use one of the earlier free-standing DOS's which probably can be picked up at auctions, flea-markets, etc. ---Jim
Those suck, too. The only two decent DOS packages I've dealt with are post-7 Microsoft releases and DR-DOS, aka OpenDOS. MS-DOS 6.22 was okay, but 7 is better, IMHO. Come to your own conclusion, though :]. -- -=|JP|=- "Why, oh, why didn't I take the blue pill?"
