Hi-- Can someone tell me what's available for TW to play a MIDI keyboard? Interested in getting different tones, etc--piano, organ whatever is available. Have a low-end MIDI keyboard to play around with. I do play actual piano and B3 organ, but just looking for some fun. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Wow! I let Google do the walking! Now can somebody tell me how to just play music, and not have to be a programmer? Something simple, please! I'm not a composer. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Being tone-deaf, I can't tell you how to play music, but it would help if you expanded a little more on what you are looking for. Do you want something that simply lets you add different sounds to a loop that repeats? Mix existing sounds? Have something that maps piano keys to keyboard keys? Just what are you looking to do in having fun with it? -- David C. Try rosegarden, it's got extensive midi support. You might have to use qjackctl to connect it's output via jack to alsa. It also has great help and there are tutorials available. Hi, I am not a MIDI user expert but as far as I know Ardour's MIDI support (version 5) should be stable and mature now: https://manual.ardour.org/midi/ Ardour is closest DAW we have to pro tools in the open source, highly recommended to check out Cheers Nic On 05/12/2019 08:32, Dave Plater wrote:

Kind Regards,
I have installed qjackctl, and rosegarden. I have the Ardour file and it is going to take a while to go thru it. Thank you and all for your assistance! --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Kind Regards,
I looked at Ardour, and it's way too complicated, as well as not wanting to install. Installed Rosegarden. Installed the Jack file. I did manage to see activity on the screen when pushing keys on the controller (keyboard) but no sound came out, so at least I know the cable is connected properly. This is going to be a long slog, I'm afraid. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Doug, it's quite simple, open qjackctl with rosegarden running, click the connect button and in the dialogue box select the alsa tab and connect rosegarden to alsa, I see that a midi through object is available so maybe you don't even need rosegarden. Try zynaddsubfx if you want something simpler, it also needs to connect through jack. Hi Doug, The easiest way to play your MIDI-keyboard and get some sound is to use qsynth [1]. It's a fronted to fluidsynth [2]. Just install them with yast or zypper, they're in standard repo. However the developer Rui Nuno Capela is using Opensuse and has his own user repo [3] which has a lot of goodies in it. You'll need a soundfont in fluidsynth but that should be automatically installed when you install qsynth. To get good response you should use jack-audio-connectios-kit [4]. If you don't want that pure alsa is ok when you just need to play an instrument. Third and really not good for playing with low latency is pulseaudio (which is default in Opensuse). But I suggest you start with pulseaudio since it's the easiest for you right now. To go to jack on Opensuse is a major leap if you never done that before and needs some tinkering with the audio-system. You mentioned B3 organ. Have look at Bristol [5] Another soft synthesizer with lovely sound is ZynAddSubFX [6]. A little bit more awkward interface though. It's more of a real synth with it's own sounds than just a synth trying to replicate "normal" instruments. If you need more help please feel free to email me directly, or here if you prefer that. I'm quite sure I can't answer all of the questions but I've certainly done all the mistakes ;) [1] https://qsynth.sourceforge.io/qsynth-index.html [2] http://www.fluidsynth.org/ [3] https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:rncbc [4] https://jackaudio.org/ [5] https://sourceforge.net/projects/bristol/ [6] https://zynaddsubfx.sourceforge.io/ PS. I'm a musician since 40 years back. Now days only amateur. I've got a studio in my basement and it's built around Linux. Been that way since 2003-2004. I've used Gentoo, Jacklab, SuSE, Opensuse and now Ubuntustudio. I use Opensuse TW (on my laptop) for MIDI when i travel. DS.
