Printing to an HP connected to Win98 machine
Our printer is connected to my wife's win98 laptop (it's an 1170Cxi). I shared her system and her printer. When I go into LinNeighborhood, I can see her computer, C drive and printer, but I cannot connect to it. I've tried using KDE and Yast (Cups) to connect to it, but can't. Do I need to mount her drive (no! not like that!)? 1. It doesn't detect it 2. I try to configure it and use SMB Printing, I enter the IP, it (yast2) locates the queue, but when I test the remote SMB access I get: There was a problem. You specified an invalid queue name on the printer server, the printer server does not accept print jobs, or the queue on the printer server doesnot accept print jobs. Session request to 192.168.2.9 failed (called name not present) Any thoughts? You might have an easier time of it if you connected the printer to your machine and setup CUPS so that it lets her machine print to yours. Just a thought.
I thought the same thing. The problem is the printer is her company's and she uses the scanning function quite often. If it's connected to mine, she can't scan. I had it connected to a print server on our cable router, and that worked fine. Then she needed to start scanning. Yup! All there. Same work group?

I'm rather interested in this thread also, save that I have XPPro. And the same 'political' concerns - meaning I can't move the printer to my machine, even though that would make more sense. Has anyone managed to share an XP connected printer with a Suse machine? On Tue, 2003-05-20 at 13:05, Jerry Feldman wrote:

I used to be able to do it, but I can't remember how. Also, it was when I had 8.0. Tom
I think I got somewhere. I went to my browser http://localhost:631 (this is the cups server...or something) I clicked on Administration. I logged in as root. I then opened LinNeighborhood and found my wife's network, laptop and printer. Leaving that open I went back to cups on my browser. I entered her printer name under name, and IP address under Location. Then clicked Continue. Under device, I chose Windows Printer via SAMBA which was located at the bottom of the drop down list. Click Continue For Device URI I entered: smb://STD_LS/BECKY/HP-BECKY and clicked Continue I chose Hewlett-Packard under Make and clicked Continue. Then chose 1170CXI (can't remember which one). Then Continue. Last screen says HP-BECKY has been added. I click on the link, then click Print Test Page and BAM! there's my page in color and b/w. Best of luck! I'm printing a test page right now that came from my cups control center on my browser. When I go to KDE and select cups under printers, then click on this printer...I crash. KDE Control Center closes on me. Thoughts? Tom On Tue, 2003-05-20 at 12:34, Tom Nielsen wrote:
