Re: [S.u.S.E. Linux] 5.2 and Adaptec 2940UW

Hello all!
I've just got 5.2 and started to try to upgrade my system....
BUT.... when it comes to finding the SCSI card it hangs.
The card is an Adaptec 2940UW and I'm trying to load the correct driver module.
I get the same result if I try to use the kernel with support compiled into it (copied from the CD to a floppy)
The system that I installed using 5.1 works fine with this card, as it has to as the CDROM drive is SCSI.
The messages that I get are:-
(scsi0:-1:-1:-1) bad scbptr 16 during SELTO (scsi0:-1:-1:-1) referenced SCB255 not valid during SELTO SCSISEQ = 0x5a SEQADDR = 0x8 STAT0 = 0x15 SSTAT1 = 0x8a
This scrolls up the screen, with a further message every 5 secs or so about abort and reset (I think) but it is too fast to read.
The only way out is CTRL/ALT/DEL or reset button on the computer.
I have tried updating using the boot disc from 5.1 but it gets into YaST and says that the CD is the wrong one!
I have also tried using my previously generated rescue disc.
Any suggestions??
Thanks for reading this far!!
System Info: Micronics Twister ATX Motherboard. AMD K6 200MHz Adaptec 2940UW ver.1.25 BIOS 3COM 905 Network card Matrox Millenium II video card.
System works fine with S.u.S.E 5.1 and kernel 2.0.32 with compiled-in support for the SCSI card, and network card.
Thanks to both Hubert and sm for replies... I've tried the the downloaded kernel from ftp.suse.com:/pub/suse_update/suse52/disks/scsi01 , but this gives me the same results as the 5.2 CDs. I've also tried various settings on the SCSI card, but yo no avail. Any more suggestions anyboby? TIA... -- Cheers! Hmmm I have a : <4>scsi0 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 5.0.7/3.2.2 <4> <Adaptec AHA-294X Ultra SCSI host adapter> And an Intel 200MMX, 128megs ram, 1 Seagte Barracuda, 2 SCSI cd-roms. 3C509, AWE64 w/4megs, RevealRadio FM card, Matrox Millenium I w/8megs, etc. I can use the Suse provided kernel or compile one and it works. Try changing the slot the 2940 is in and then pull out some other cards and eliminate the conflict. Doug just released version 5.0.15 of the driver which should address exactly this kind of problem. I just created a bootdisk with this driver. It should be available at ftp.suse.com:/pub/suse_update/suse52/disks/scsi01 in some hours (when you awake ;-), so please give it a try. If nothing helps, I've put a bootdisk with the old driver (version 4.1.1) on the ftp server (file scsi01.old). But please note that this is only an intermittent solution because the new driver already is in 2.0.34-pre15 and in 2.1.102. I'm attaching the announcement from Doug... Another note: This bootdisk already contains a new version of linuxrc which has another language added (french). Do not choose this language because the YaST of your CD doesn't yet know about this new language. The complete french version is almost ready and coming soon ;-)
TIA...

Thanks for all this Hubert... I've found scsi.old , and this enabled me to boot the system. I've managed to upgrade the system to 5.2 using this, but as I had today off work, I did some further investigating: It seems that the CDRom drive is the problem. I have been trying to use a JVC XRW-2010 CD R/W drive which worked fine as a reader under SuSE 5.1. Changing this for an old Sony CDU 8003 (Apple CD300), and the new kernel boots just fine! I'm working away from the computer for a while.... I'll try the new driver with the JVC drive when I get back. Thanks for all the help so far.... -- Cheers! I've just returned, and downloaded the aic7xxx-5.0.17 versionof the driver. This driver is compiled into the SuSE 5.2 kernal 2.0.33 and everything is working fine. Hi, I had the same pb with the nearly the same configuration, here is how I resolved it: - For the SCB error (...referenced SCB255 not valid ...) . I changed the on board bios configuration by disabling "automatic translation" . and booted linux passing "extended, no_reset" to the aic7xxx driver i.e: at boot prompt type linux aic7xxx=externed,no_reset or setup theses options as default with "lilo" configuration module of Yast - Once this one was resolved, an other one appeared, hanging the system with an error message like "...scsi error due to timeout..." scrolling up the screen . The problem disapeared when - by coincidence - changed my video card (a cirrius gld5434 with 1Mb ram for a Matrox Millenium II with 4Mb ram). Now every thing is Ok with the following configuration: Pentium S 75Mz, Full SCSI based on "Adaptec 2940UW " (CDROM, DAT, 500Mb + 2Gb disks) Video is Matrox Millenium II with 4Mb ram (Xserver is SVGA) Novell ethernet card. Good luck ! Alan Lythaby wrote:
