-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi: I have recently bought a new computer P4 1.4 Ghz and a 40 Gb HD. It comes with WinME preinstalled, so I thought I'd do a dual boot installation with SuSE 7.2 personal. After the installation completed, and I rebooted the system, all I got was a screen full of "01" and no load. Using the CD1, I am able to load into Linux, but no way to do Windows. I tried Mandrake 8.1 PowerPack, and it works fine, so I went back and did SuSE one more time. No luck. Is this a LILO/SuSE problem? Any workarounds? Thank you. - -- Alfredo J. What kernel did you install ? Also, try using the 'safe mode' ( choose linux, but type "disableapic ide=nodma apm=off" before pressing enter ) There seems to be an apic problem on many P4's, I have had reports of problem all around my campus, but havn't been (un)lucky enough yet to get a P4 to play with myself.. - -tosi - -- This mail is sent using KMail and Linux. The default 2.4.4-4GB
Also, try using the 'safe mode' ( choose linux, but type "disableapic ide=nodma apm=off" before pressing enter )
Well, that's the problem. I don't get a LILO prompt. I have to use the CD1 to load Linux. I choose install and later on I ask it to load the installed system.

Booting with the Windows install disk, and doing FDISK /MBR lets me load Windows again, but no SuSE. I think I should install LILO on the Linux partition and not the MBR. I will try and see what happens. - -- Alfredo J. L01 is an error that usually indicates wrong disk geometry settings in lilo. When you boot into linux using the CD, edit /etc/lilo.conf and look for a line with either "linear" or "lba32" on it. I'm guessing you have "lba32". Try changing that to read "linear", then run /sbin/lilo and try rebooting. For more information on the lilo error codes, run "gv /usr/share/doc/packages/lilo/user.ps.gz". On page 44 is a list of the possible errors that can occur and what they mean. Anders

This was interesting. I'm still baffled, though, by the fact that LM 8.1 loads correctly. It won't recognize my sound card, and SuSE will, so I have to go with SuSE (plus that's what I use in my notebook). Thank you. - -- Alfredo J.
