How does opensuse automatically set the xauth and DISPLAY when using su? I'd like to do the same thing with debian. Also, I remember long ago there used to be a way to run an x-server in an x-window. I think it was called zephyr but this seems to be an entirely different thing now. Does anyone remember or know a way?

man xdg-su xdg-su - run a GUI program as another user (typically root) after prompting for that user's password

It's Xephyr and it's in xorg-x11-server-extra

add
session optional pam_xauth.so
to the end of /etc/pam.d/su
And likely /etc/pam.d/su-l
