Hmm. Did you check the setting for START_PORTMAP in /etc/rc.config? There doesn't seem to be a variable for NFSD. I remember a buf in 6.2 where a setting wasn't put back into rc.config, but don't remember wether that was portmap.
But for the time beeing I am as clueless. I don't remember any problems with NFS when I used it.

That was the first thing I tried and it does not fix the problem.

start yast (now "hinting" from my german screen... ) choose "network configuration" then "configure network services"
answer a few question, preferebly with yes, particulary the one about portmap ;-)

I had been able to do nfs mount and I suspect the problem is in a script that got updated when I last applied updates to 6.3. I am not sure which packages or script files to look at, any help would be appreciated. I think this is a bug in the default config for 6.3. It seems that the default settings in /etc/rc.config are to use the user space NFS server, but the package with these tools in is NOT installed. Try adding the package "nfsserv" from series "n" and then running rcnfsserver restart Peter.

Shouldn't I get some sort of list from the portmapper?
I am clueless now. ;-( On my system: brauki@marvin:/home/brauki > rpcinfo -p localhost program vers proto port 100000 2 tcp 111 portmapper 100000 2 udp 111 portmapper 545580417 1 udp 876 bwnfsd 545580417 1 tcp 878 bwnfsd 100005 1 udp 925 mountd 100005 2 udp 925 mountd 100005 1 tcp 928 mountd 100005 2 tcp 928 mountd 100003 2 udp 2049 nfs 100003 2 tcp 2049 nfs ame with rpconfo -p 192.168.42.243 (It's my ip address). It is the machine I am trying to mount that is the problem as well as a line that needs to be in /etc/hosts.allow. The machine that I am trying to nfs mount has disabled the nfs server which was why I had the first error message. There is also some problem with my /etc/hosts.deny as well which seems to be why I get the error message from rpcinfo. At least I know where to look now, thanks for your help.
