[opensuse] My first prob with 11.2 embedded flash won't play
Hmmm I seem to have bumped into an odd problem with my 11.2 install (KDE4 default and Firefox).... embedded Flash will not play. For example, this page: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8361025.stm has a small Flash video embedded in the page. It shows the initial image as normal with "click to play", but clicking has no effect. I've seen the same on embedded YouTube videos - but there if I right-click on the embedded video I have an option "Play in YouTube" and if I select that option, YouTube is opened in a new tab and the video plays fine. So.. given that Flash video will actually play if I am directly in YouTube... something else is wrong, and I have no idea what. Anyone else see this with 11.2? Or have any ideas why embedded Flash won't play in some instances? C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Uninstall the package libflashsupport, and see then. This was fixing my probs with flash. The package gives pulse support to flash, but pulse is not working for me. After i have uninstalled the libflashsupport, and flash was working then, i uninstalled all i coud from puls. There is only the libpulse which can not be uninstalled, but the rest can easyly dumpt. It's not installed.... wasn't installed by the default base install either. Also, PulseAudio is not installed - it was not installed when I installed 11.2, and I've nto added anything Pulse related. Worth noting... Flash does work as expected on YouTube.com, but if the same YouTube video is embedded in another webpage, or it's an embedded Flash like in the BBC News webpage I linked earlier, it just will not play... clicking the play button does nothing. Well... technically Java was installed.. by default I got Java OpenJDK. I removed that, and installed Java 1.6 (Sun) and embedded Flash started working again. So... it appears that OpenJDK is basically broken for Desktop users, and that's what they get by default :-( Time to send off an email to the new users I told to try out openSUSE... tell them to remove the JavaOpenJDK and replace it with Sun Java. Sigh. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No problem playing it here (11.2, Firefox 3.5.4). Do you have NoScript installed and running in which case have you given the 2 BBC URLs permission? Nope, a plain vanilla install, with only AdBlockPlus as an extra in FireFox using the same ABP config from my working 11.1. C -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hmmmm, yet another mysterious "it doesn't work for me" :-( . I can only say, if it would be of help, is that the 11.2 I am using is RC2 upgraded to GM via zypper; that I am using the 32-bit version of 11.2; and that I have found that some sites will not allow video to be shown in some parts of the world - for example my wife complains that one site in the US will not play a video just because we are in Australia ("Video is not available to your country" or some such :-( ). I traced it (thanks to a hint from M.Schueller) to the fact that Java OpenJDK is installed by default (in a clean install) instead if Java Sun... the result is some things that rely on Java don't work with the OpenJDK version. I've done some digging, and this is not unique or new... it's just the OpenJDK version, and it appears that a few things simply don't work... in my opinion OpenJDK is a weak cousin to the "real" Java. Once I ripped OpenJDK Java out and installed the "real" Java, everything started working correctly. I've since contacted a couple friends who are trying out openSUSE for the first time and who had the exact same problem... they've replaced Java, and it's now working for them too. I'm guessing that on an upgrade, you already had a working Java install... and that was simply carried over into the update to 11.2. I can't replicate it either, although I did see it on 2 machines/installs back when I reported it. I have to free up a computer and do a clean install to see if I can get it to happen again. It didn't happen with RC1 or RC2, but when I did clean installs of the Final from the full DVD... that's when it cropped up. I'll try again... maybe this weekend when I can pull a computer out of the loop and do a reinstall with all defaults. To the best of my knowledge, the only thing in OOo that needs Java are the various wizards. If you install OOo without Java it should work fine.. unless you access a function that uses the wizards. Could you post a link to a non-working flash site, please? I wan't to see if "meetoo".
I already did in the first message in this thread - the easiest to find is basically any BBC news page that has embedded video - for example http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8361025.stm Also any site than has embedded YoutTube videos will exhibit the same behavior (although playing directly in YouTube.com works OK).

I would call it a workaround :-) It's a problem that new users are going to stumble on and not know how to solve without the inside knowledge that OpenJDK doesn't work right. I'm OK with replacing OpenJDK with a real Java, but... honestly.. I think that the real Java should be pulled in anyway when Flash etc. are installed with the first time run on the Software Installer. I'm sure that someone somewhere has a reason for including OpenJDK instead of Sun Java (probably some dislike of the licensing thing Sun has)... but in the end if it doesn't work, it should either not be included at all, fixed (I've opened a bug report on it), or Sun Java should be pulled in with other "restricted" packages. "Mysterious" is probably an understatement :-) . As you may have read the thread about 11.2 installing the kernel-default and not the -pae or the -desktop on installation, in my last installation (on the other HDs) I deliberately deselected the kernel-default in order to select the kernel-desktop. But when I went to do so I found that the -desktop was already selected. What occurs is that by deselecting -default, the installation process automatically selects -desktop; and, at this point, if you deselect -desktop it auto. selects -default :-) . You can go back and forth for hours doing this if you want to :-D . Anyway, some googling got me to this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/+bug/410407 which provided a workaround for me: download the 64-bit version of Flash 10 from Adobe (it's prerelease right now): http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html I uninstalled any flash-related stuff provided by openSUSE, then copied the libflashplayer.so I got from Adobe to /usr/lib64/browser-plugins/ (make sure to copy to /usr/lib64 since it's 64-bit). i had a similar problem getting flash to play -- no amount of re- installing from yast would play those little buggers for me, and i was getting the latest v10 flash installed i googled around and found v9 available from one of adobe's sites and downloaded the _tar.gz -- unzipped, untarred and started looking for an installer -- no such luck what i wound up doing to install it was to first create a plugins path off ~/.mozilla/firefox/Opfybl2k.default/ (that last will be different in your installation, but it will end in default/ ), and dropped the libflashplayer.so in there -- presto, flash video now plays for me i don't know why v10 won't work for me and v9 works fine, but at this point i don't care -- it works i had a similar problem with firefox itself -- the suse branded FF would not work, but plain jane FF from mozilla works fine -- go figure sc -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
