I've had SuSE 9.0 Pro running on my server for a while now with only 1 of the 2 CPU's. I've recently aquired the second CPU and am wondering if I need to re-install SuSE in order to fully take advantage of the second CPU. I am using the stock Kernel from when I installed, plus any updates that have came down via YAST. Thanks for the info. -={ Kyle }=- __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! What you'll need to do is use an SMP kernel. You can either compile your own (turn on SMP support in the kernel config and set the number of CPUs to 2) or use the precompiled one, which you should be able to install with YaST. The regular kernel will work, but it will not run as fast as it should with the two CPUs. -----Original Message----- From: Kyle Korndoerfer [mailto:kkorndoerfer@yahoo.com] Sent: Friday, October 29, 2004 9:10 PM To: SuSE-Linux Subject: [SLE] 1->2 CPU, reinstall needed? Of course, it will run exactly as fast as it should. But a multiple-CPU system will not run as fast as it _could_ with an SMP kernel. And of course, if you want to truly maximize your system's performance, you will have to build a kernel with the processor-specific options best suited to the CPU(s) it uses. Randall Schulz

-={ Kyle }=- Hi,
All you need is to switch kernels to the SMP version. You should be able to do it in YAST. The regular install process automagically recognizes the SMP hardware, but you have to manually switch the kernels for a upgraded HW config. I know of no other significant changes that need to be made. PeterB -- Using SUSE since 5.2 Loving SUSE 9.1 Pro My Blog: http://vancampen.org/blog --
