[SLE] xmms on OpenSuSE 10.1
Whats the trick to getting xmms 1.2.10 to play mp3 files on SuSE 10.1? Juk can mp3s Realplayer 10 can play mp3 Amarok can play mp3s (although it seems to suffer massive memory leaks) Kaffeine can play mp3s Xine can play mp3s (these latter two impose ridiculous CPU loads doing so.) So whats with xmms? Do I have to installed the Packman versions or what? -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Did you check Packman, John? xmms-lib-mad-1.2.10-79.pm.1 xmms-1.2.10-98.pm.1 I'm running 10.0 at the moment so the version numbers might be different but the same setup works under 10.1, as well. hth & regards, Carl -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

xmms-lib-mad-1.2.10-79.pm.1 xmms-1.2.10-98.pm.1
Yes, that's what I eventually did. The Packman works without the xmms-lib-mad. (Same files in xmms-lib for 10.1 Why does SUSE think they are still obligated to cripple these packages when no other distro does so? -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
I have been told by the packman people that xmms is going away and won't be support in the future because it doesn't comply with (my appolgies, I forgot the reason) something that is going away that it is dependent on. Instead I am advised to switch to beep-media-play or audacious which are both a spin off of xmms. Cheers, Bob John Andersen wrote:

Hopefully xmms2 will be out by then. Right now xmms is the only thing that reliably reads mp3 streams from DigitallyImported.Com. For some reason Amarok locks up trying. _____________________________________ John Andersen

I have to concur. mpg123 (not packaged anymore, but I got some copy, presumably from 8.2), streamripper and MPlayer do the DI streams well. -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 140780 Dec 17 2004 /usr/bin/mpg123 Works for me. $ mplayer http://64.236.34.196:80/stream/1003 Playing http://64.236.34.196:80/stream/1003. Okay, I'm curious... where'd you get these CLI stream listings? :-) Carl -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Carl ========= Someone mentioned audacious as a replacement for xmms, so I decided to take a look. It's got a look very much like xmms and does a good job of playing mp3s and ogg files. I haven't tried streaming yet. Thing is, every time I tried to change the font size, so the main window wasn't teeny tiny in size, it would lock up. I didn't run into any other problems in the preferences or program.
Thoughts, suggestions? regards, Lee -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com
I switched from xmms to audacious and then to beep-media-player. I use heavily the arrow keys to fast forward and rewind and found that beep behaved more like xmms with that aspect. Cheers, Bob BandiPat wrote:

wget di.fm/trance.pls Or lust look at the website, di.fm, where there are little icons saying "96k" "24k" "32k" next to each channel. And in fact, "Open URL" with winamp/xmms and opening these pls will just import the bunch of servers into your playlist. Thanks, Jan! Just goes to show there's always something to learn. I didn't know about this feature/behavior in xmms and it's my 'everyday' stream player. regards, Carl -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com
