Tried the symbolic link to libtiff.so.3 and still no go.
Now what ? google or a lot more information.... Sorry. Running 11.3, trying to use Mustek A3 SP 1200 scanner.
Found driver libsane.1.0.19.2 for deb / used alien to convert to rpm / tried to install and got above message.
Googled and from the reference to try the symbolic link - which didn't work.
Should I try to install with --nodeps ?
Thanks, Duaine

Ok, what the bleep are you doing ? we do not ship i386 packages the "libsane" you are installing is not compatible with the product neither the distribution you are running. Pure luck! You still haven't really answered why you need that Ubuntu Package. Why not search software.opensuse.org/search for available libsane packages and use one of those if the version number is equal or greater? Would save you lots of work and would have the benefit of working without dirty tricks like the symlink. If it doesn't crash or misbehave I will be surprised. The symlink trick is only for wizards who know exactly what they are doing (and for that reason, they probably wont do that anyway) For the common mortals, a library having a different SONAME means it is incompatible with the old version. On a good day, it will crash, in a bad one, the program may apparently work but do crazy things and is when the loss of hair starts. You have been warned. Philipp The details are very sketchy, however, the first time I tried this, several years ago.
The scanner is an old Mustek 11" x 17" A3 SP 1200 Pro. I did a search for the driver for suse and found nothing - except one for debian (not ubuntu specific) The driver was provided somewhere in Japan - and - only the Debian version. Which, then, as now, caused the same conflicts with the library versions and missing tiff driver and was not going to swap out my product scanner drivers every time I needed to run this old Mustek - so - went back to windoze. Then I had no idea about Vbox and had trouble getting vmware to work at all. Plus, officially, Mustek kept listing this scanner as unsupported in xsane - until I found that driver link.
