[SLE] Matrox Marvell G200-TV, can it run X?
Hello Folks, I'm going to install 6.3 on a machine with a Matrox Marvel G200TV on a friends machine. I have searched various sites like XFree86 and SuSE to find if the card will work. The SuSE database has a status of unknown and I can't seem to get to the card list at Xfree86. The Matrox site says its a Mystique G200 with their TV stuff added in. I don't care about the TV stuff. I would like the computer to run X at 1280x1024. It is for an disgruntled AIX end user (uses a 42T all day long..) who would like to experiment with Linux in general. I would like to know if X will work before attempting an installation. I want Linux to look good, you know what I mean. I'm trying to get an individual to see the light. This individuals current unix experience is not the most enlightening. Linux on a PII 400 with a udma-66 drive and a 128MB of ram would make Linux/unix look like the ultimate OS and environment compared to a 1994 42T with 8 bit color. I'm running a Millennium G200 very well at 1490x1117 @80Hz. Much better X than the 43P that I use. Does anybody have a Marvel or Mystique anything running X? Is it safe to say any Matrox with the G200 chip set would use the XFree86_SVGA server? Well, this is just my two cents, but... Any Matrox card with the G200 chipset should work with anyother G200 drivers, if all you need is X. Since it's the same company, I believe they design the cards all the same, then addon tv/video out/video in, and all sorts of goodies. I have an Asus V3800 Deluxe, which is a Nvidia TNT2 Ultra chip. I believe I used the Creative TNT2 Ultra drivers in XF86Setup. It works fine. My pov on the matter is this: If you have something complex, like tv out, etc, and all you need is something simple, but you can't find your exact drivers, use something basic. For instance, I have a TNT2 Ultra from Asus with TV out, TV in, SVideo Out etc, but my drivers are not available, I don't want to choose the Diamond TNT2 Ultra with all the goodies, I want to keep it simple. Two different companies will probably implement the TNT2 Ultra the same, since it's from Nvidia, but the extras are individually added and designed. darn...hope I'm clear...sorry for the raving. It should work just fine with simple G200 drivers, since it's all within the same company. If you want the extras later, maybe there will be drivers, or use a third party driver just for the extras. hope I helped and didn't confuse, Justin On Sat, 15 Jan 2000, btm77 wrote:
