[S.u.S.E. Linux] SANE Scanner support is cool
I recently compiled SANE scanner support for my HP 3c flatbed scanner and was quite impressed with the way it will attach to the GIMP by making a symnbolic link. I can now scan directly into the GIMP which is quite nice using SANE. I did notice a few things about SANE though. Compiling the program errored on creating or finding a device called /dev/scanner until I saw what it actually was looking for which was a /dev/sg0 device. This also happened when I installed xvscan and the folks at xvscan told me the fix. To correct this, I pointed the install program to look at the /dev object I wished. This took a few tries.I could not manage to get SANE to compile as anything other than root probably because it wants to read and write to the /dev tree or something like that. I must report though that if you are using SuSE that SANE provides a nice tcl/tk environment to scan with and its direct scanning for the GIMP make it a very nice addition. So if you are looking for something to support your scanner, SANE provides a nice interface. I also use xvscan which is the same as xv but with scanning extensions. It works quite well also. -- --Michael Perry-- mperry@basin.com -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
