Does Suse 8.2 or 9 support webcams as Philips Touchcam? How can I setting up one?. Can I use any program for videoconference?
Since we are on the topic, anyone has to suggest an IM proggy who support a firewall friendly video conference protocol? That means that h323 is excluded. It would be OK just to find a video conference program without IM, but with a firewall friendly protocol.
I have a philips PCVC680K webcam. The hardware info says it is there, and there appears to be a link setup between /dev/video and /dev/video0 (I believe video0 is the philiips camera). However, gnomemeeting (the webcam application on my kde desktop), will only let me select /dev/video1394 or / dev/raw1394 (which Ihave nothing on my 1394, even disabled it in my bios). So, SuSE 9.0 appears to "support" it, but I haven't under SuSE 9.0 gotten any app to be able to use it. On Monday 10 November 2003 18:39, Anatoly Kuragin wrote:

I have a tuocam myself, PVC720K/00, and I was able to get some support but without color (green looking display). I had to download the ov511 driver from the driver original site, to get the 518 decompressor that was needed. Now, I don't yours is the same problem, but you should look around and see if you can't find a workable driver.
Well, the camear appears to be detected, for the light comes on the camera, and the info shows the camera. I just cant get gnomemeeting to use the /dev/video0 device, it always goes to the /dev/video1394. So I am not sure I need another driver, perhaps I do. But I am confused then why the camera appears to be reflected in the "info" section of yast. On Tuesday 11 November 2003 07:18, Örn Hansen wrote:

I can't say for this webcam, but quite a number of Philips cameras are supported ... see http://www.linux-usb.org. I use gnomemeeting for videoconferencing, works fine on SuSE. Regards Sid. Anatoly Kuragin wrote:

It may be supported by the pwc module - try plugging it in and seeing if the module is loaded. I don't see it listed as either working or not working, but I guess you may mean the TouCam, in which case some models work, and some don't. If it is, then you can access the full suite of Philips functions, as well as use it at a more usable resolution by getting the pwcx module from http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ - the module works very well with my Logitech Quickcam 3000 Pro (as seen at http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk/webcam.php) I recommend getting camstream from http://packman.links2linux.org to help you configure the cam's brightness, colour balance etc...

I enjoyed the cam and the others you link to. I was wondering how php is used for your webcam. It's not, I use PHP to build the structure of the site, there are lots of includes to give te whole site a consistent look. -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 9.0).
