RE: [SLE] Java support in Linux WAS Java 1.1.8 to 1.3.X
After running: # rm java from /usr/lib I got: ...No such file or directory. Then I ran: # ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.0 java and got: ln: `java':File exists I realize rm java means remove directory. Why am I trying to remove this directory? What is the purpose of the second command (ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.0 java)? What is the result telling me? Hello, Michael.
You need to change the link /usr/lib/java to point to the new directory. On my system it works as follows:
(as root in the /usr/lib directory) # rm java # ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.0 java
I am using the J2RE from Sun, so your actual path to the correct Java directory will be different. /usr/lib/java is on your path, whereas most of the various Java directories aren't. As soon as you change this link, run 'java -version' again and it should now mention the correct version.
By the way, and apologies for potentially hijacking a thread, Konqueror is only able to display one of the Java apps on the homepage at http://java.sun.com, whereas Netscape 6.2 is able to display both. Also, the speed test utility out at http://www.dslreports.com does not work at all on my Linux box. It appears that either Java support in Linux is still somewhat patchy, or certain sites persist in writing Java that will only run on MS.
Bye for now, Stuart.
The issue is Konqueror. Java support is far from patchy in Linux. One does not write Java that only runs on MS platforms; otherwise Sun would not allow you to call it Java, and is why Sun pulled Java out from under MS in a lawsuit. -ronc -- 2:52pm up 5 days, 17:15, 1 user, load average: 0.11, 0.04, 0.01 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com

That's wrong. It should be rm /usr/lib/java
I got:
...No such file or directory.
Then I ran: # ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.0 java
And that should be ln -s /usr/java/jre1.4.0 /usr/lib/java
and got:
ln: `java':File exists
I realize rm java means remove directory. Why am I trying to remove this
rm means remove. rmdir means remove directory. //Anders
