Starting X w/ nvidia VERY slow
Well, I finally got 3D to work in 8.1 using the 3123 nvidia drivers. I'm getting about 2500 fps in gears, so no complaints there. But whenever I "startx" from the console, it take 30 - 35 seconds before the nvidia splash screen appears. I know this issue has appeared before on this list, but I haven't been able to find any real answers. The last time this happened to me (SuSE 8.0) I was experiencing a 15 - 20 second delay (same hardware). It seems to be getting worse! Does anyone have any clues at all about this? I've searched the nvidia and suse knowledge bases w/ no success. Any ideas would be appreciated. Yep, me too. I've noticed this happening ever since 8.1. I have suspected, but can't confirm, that there have been changes in the way the SuSE, Nvidia, or the Xserver is running/functioning in 8.1. You can add to the XF86Config file the follow" Option "NoLogo" "1" in the section for nvidia, it will look like this: Section "Device" BoardName "GeForce3 Ti 200" BusID "1:0:0" Driver "nvidia" Identifier "Device[0]" Screen 0 VendorName "NVidia" Option "DigitalVibrance" "10" Option "NoLogo" "1" EndSection This may help a bit, since the program won't have to render a splash screen, however, it still takes a while. I have also noticed that since I have installed a webcam now it takes even longer. I think it has to do with how the drivers, xserver, and various devices initialize - but I'm just guessing here. Same here with some older hardware (see output of `lspci -vv' at
the end of this email). Switching from X to a virtual console and
then back again to X shows a considerable delay as well. I suspect this
delay is not a "normal" delay caused by bloated software: it seems
to lock up the hardware for some time. Do for example a `find /',
and while that is running run `startx'. You'll notice that the
rumbling of the disk (caused by find) will stop for a while, and
continues after the nVidia splash screen is shown. I find this very
annoying. I suspect this will also ruin an ongoing sync action to
my Palm, which runs via a serial port (not tried yet though).
Another thing that I see with the nVidia driver: scrolling text
is _extremely_ slow! Doing an `ll' in my home directory (containing
370 files/directories) takes about 15 seconds, and yet `time ll'
tells me it took only half a second. It seems that X (or whatever)
cannot cope with the output of ll.
Not using the nVidia driver makes text scrolling normal again (so
much for acceleration!), but then I cannot watch mpeg/avi files in
a decent frame rate.
Sorry for this "me too" without any further help. I did try finding
a solution for this, but up to now no result.
Paul.
