Hi, I'm just assembling my new pc and wondering which DVD-reader/CD-burner combo to put in if I want that to work fine with Suse 9.0. Could you please help me? I have Nec, Mitshumi, or Samsung in mind. Also asking if I can expect problems with Suse using a Powercolor Radeon 9200SE 128MB video card. Thanks for any help, Marton Balazs

Marton, Stay away from Mitsumi drives, very not Linux friendly from my previous experience with a few models. NEC, questionable and Samsung usable. Stay away from LG models, as they have a bug in the cdrw models that could prove hazardous. Ask Mandrake users about that. ;o) Sony drives seem to work nicely, LiteOn drives, Acer, and many others. I think if those 3 are the only available to you, then Samsung would be my first choice. Using ATI Radeon 9200 here, but believe the Powercolor unit will serve you well with the latest drivers. I use the LG 4040B and it runs just fine. I use the latest k3b and have an NVidia MX420. Geoff On Wednesday 17 December 2003 19:34, BandiPat wrote:

Geoff I too just got the LG 4040B and it does a fine job running as ATAPI under K3b. LG warns on its site that you should be sure you have the latest firmware to avoid the bug referred to previously.
Whichever unit you decide to get, be sure you use good name brand media. Cheap Cd and DVD media probably wont work. Most of my old 2x stuff is now worthless. ra

Lee I have a Liteon on the Mandrake 9.2 box and a brand new MSI on this SuSE 9.0 box, both working fine. I gather that some Windows and other OS's experience problems with LG because they chose to misuse a command they thought no one would use, they just used it to destroy the microcode on the device - very bright eh?, so when Mandrake thought they were clearing cache, LG were happily destroying the microcode instead. Don't get the following drive: LG HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4320B It doesn't get detected correctly during install with the DVD. The DVD install hangs in the getting package details bit. I've had to install using the CDroms instead and then manually set the install source to be the DVD. SuSE also doesn't create a DVD icon or link for it in the /dev/ section... to read DVDs as real DVDs with programs like xine or Ogle, I've had to create a symlink for /dev/dvd to the /dev/cdrecorder item... And another thing... I can't get DMA enabled for the damned thing but DMA works fine in ms-windows... Paul Cooke
