Further fiddling w/KDE 3.2.3 upgrade and Xine problem
Hello; Thanks for all teh replies to my earlier request for assistance regarding upgrading to KDE 3.2.3 Apparently I had a problem with K3b that I didn't know about until I went to backup some data. Making a long story short, I ended up using YAST2 to do the KDE upgrade again to get K3b working properly. Alas, now Xine is broken. After much screwing around with Apt, which I know little about, as well as using rpm from the CLI, I've gotten past all the dependency issues and have the latest from Packman's Xine directory installed. But. Xine won't play a DVD. I get the following when trying to play a movie: Input Plugin failed to open MRL DVD:/ Doing some looking around on the 'net I've made sure I have a symlink to the DVD. I have checked my permissions. I'm in groups Wheel and Disk amongst others. The /dev/dvd is group Disk too. Even logged in as root I cannot play the device. I am able to access the Suse install DVD via YAST btw. Xine' input setup page indicates /dev/dvd Yes, I have installed the libdvdcss file. Kaffine also refuse to play DVD's with the official 'bad boy!' disclaimer. Kaffines xine setup also indicates /dev/dvd as the relevant device. Whats left? Help?! Tim

How about libdvdread?

try running xine with --verbose=9 and look at/post the output

Yes, I have: libdvdread-0.9.4-68

Looks good (except I don't see xine-ui in there), but as you can see from the output with --verbose=9, it isn't actually using those versions. Check and make sure what you really have installed. Some times YaST reverts to the versions on the CD/DVD. Don't use it if you can avoid it

Nothing at all? How about

I don't know. Had you faulted out an rpm instance earlier and perhaps left a stale lock file? Well duh! You are right. I plead fatigue. You should either have deleted the files that were "already installed" from the directory (or moved them aside) or used "--replacepkgs"
I forced an update and now get this for a result:
linux:/home/tim/RPMs/xine # rpm -qa | grep xine libxine1-1_rc5-0.pm.0 libxine1-alsa09-1_rc5-0.pm.0 libxine1-ogg-1_rc5-0.pm.0 libxine1-directfb-1_rc5-0.pm.0 libxine1-w32dll-1_rc5-0.pm.0 xinetd-2.3.12-27 libxine1-esd-1_rc5-0.pm.0 libxine1-arts-1_rc5-0.pm.0 libxine1-dvd-1_rc5-0.pm.0 libxine1-opengl-1_rc5-0.pm.0 xine-ui-0.99.1-0.pm.0 libxine1-dvb-1_rc5-0.pm.0 libxine1-xvmc-1_rc5-0.pm.0 libxine1-aa-1_rc5-0.pm.0 libxine1-flac-1_rc5-0.pm.0 libxine1-devel-1_rc5-0.pm.0 libxine1-sdl-1_rc5-0.pm.0

This is a combo-unit. The original install under SuSE 9.0 had no trouble recognizing it. I don't know why it would be different now. Tim

No, it needs the device, so dev is right. But /dev/dvd isn't a real device, it is a symlink that needs to point to the correct device. What does "ls -l /dev/dvd" say, and can you mount a data dvd using "mount /media/dvd" on the command line?

What type of DVD is this? If it is a video DVD (movie) you can't mount it. Ken

Of course you can. What on earth makes you say that?
He meant, you DON'T mount it to play it in xine, you just launch xine and open the disk. Mounting it first usually screws up. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

It seems to indicate that /dev/dvd is pointing to the wrong thing. You say it's a combo unit, does that mean you only have one optical drive in the system, functioning as both dvd, cdrom and cdrecorder? In that case, can you mount a dvd using the cdrom icon? Did you try using /dev/cdrom in xine?

Yes, this is a 3 in 1 unit. And by the way, the /dev/cdrom change did the trick. My most sincere thanks for help. I likely would not have tried that change. not intuitive I guess. Tim

Hello;
Thanks for all teh replies to my earlier request for assistance regarding upgrading to KDE 3.2.3
Apparently I had a problem with K3b that I didn't know about until I went to backup some data.
I get the following when trying to play a movie:
Input Plugin failed to open MRL DVD:/
Doing some looking around on the 'net I've made sure I have a symlink to the DVD.
I have checked my permissions. I'm in groups Wheel and Disk amongst others. The /dev/dvd is group Disk too.
Even logged in as root I cannot play the device.
I am able to access the Suse install DVD via YAST btw.
Xine' input setup page indicates /dev/dvd
Yes, I have installed the libdvdcss file.
Kaffine also refuse to play DVD's with the official 'bad boy!' disclaimer. Kaffines xine setup also indicates /dev/dvd as the relevant device.
Whats left?
Help?!

Due to copyright reasons the xine package provided by SuSE is not compiled with all plugins. I reported one month ago my success with xine and SuSE 9., below is the copy : " I happened to be able to compile and run : " xine-lib-1-rc4a " xine-ui-0.99.1 " libdvdcss-1.2.8 " xine-lib crashed during compilation since the file libpopt.la is missing in package popt " I've got this file on the web and everything runs fine. Can mail it on request. " No longer need of libdvdread and libdvdnav. " Michel. So I suggest that you uninstall all the SuSE packages and install xine from sources. Download from the web : xine-lib-1-rc4a xine-ui-0.99.1 libdvdcss-1.2.8 (for encrypted dvds) as root run : # export PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH # export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH these two environment commands are necessary for xine-ui compiling untar these three files in "your directory" # cd "your directory"/xinelib-1-rc4a # ./configure # make # make install # cd "your directory"/xine-ui-0.99.1 # ./configure # make # make install # cd "your directory"/libdvdcss-1.2.8 # ./configure # make # make install Oh one important point, while running ./configure, look at the messages telling for missing packages such as : divx4linux (replaced by xvidcore) ffmpeg lame libfame popt .... install these packages from SuSE dvd or from the web if not on the dvd. They are not all necessary for compiling but for divx !!! Don't forget to install too the devel packages if you install from rpm popt is necessary and xine-lib asks for libpopt.la which is missing in the SuSE package, I happen to find it on the web, you'll find it enclosed. That's all run "xine" and enjoy Michel.
