[opensuse] OpenSuSE 11.2 and VMWare Server V2 on x86-64
The other thread seemed to be about VMWare Workstation.. So, I was wondering if anyone has successfully setup VMWare Server V2 on x86-64. I have tried downloading the latest (VMware-server-2.0.2-203138.x86_64.rpm) and get 'multiple' errors... The patch is named "vmware-server.2.0.1_x64-modules-2.6.30.4-fix.tgz", so I suppose it only works for that vmware version, not for 2.0.2. We also have kernel 2.6.31, so again, that might be a problem. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. You're right, it does NOT work. Also, if you tweak it to get it to work, you'll be in patch hell for a long time since VMware doesn't really care about quick fixes to adapt their code to the latest O/S versions. I reverted back to 11.1 for my host, it's a lot easier than doing code edits and patches for every kernel update. Well I've got VMware-server-2.0.2-203138.x86_64 and 2.6.31.5-0.1-default and at the moment Windows 7 :( is running as normal. YMMV Dave

Sorry false alarm, the mouse is erratic, even for Windows that's not really normal. Dave

But if you run VMware Server 2.0.x on a Linux host with kernel 2.6.30 or higher, you must have patched the VMware code before running vmware-config.pl, right? Which in turn means you have to patch every time you update your kernel. I just can't take that, it's just too much work, and it takes way too much time to do on a production system... Just for comparison, I installed VMware Workstation 7 x86-64 on OpenSUSE 11.2 and it went smoothly with not a single error or warning! Since Player is based on Workstation code, you might give that a go. Since version 3 you can now (officially) create a new virtual machine. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

But then.... at least that is a short-term solution to my problem... :-) Have just installed VMWare-Player, and at least can access my virtual machines. Is there a way to see the solution in English?
