Everything halts normally, and it gets to the point where is says something about the computer is shutting down, and just stops there. And of course turning off the power button on this particular machine resets it, as opposed to turning it off. Anyone know what I have to do to make it shut down completely?

You don't mention which version of Suse you're running. If it's v9.0 then insert in the file /boot/grub/menu.lst title Linux kernel (hd0,xx) ...... apm=real-mode-poweroff <== these words or if you are using lilo then insert in the section which boots linux append=" apm=real-mode-poweroff" Note the deliberate space before the word apm, also note the use of "".
