[opensuse] Hp Photosmart Prem c410 Problems
Hi, I have been trying to move to openSUSE from Ubuntu. I have managed to install nVidia drivers. But I am struggling with HP's Photosmart Prem c410 device. Its printer/fax/scanner. openSUSE can't detect it as a scanner while under Ubuntu everything is by one click. I tries to search for c410 under scanner setting but it fails to detect despite pointing to the right model. I am trying to connect over the WiFi. Help appreciated. -- Swapnil Bhartiya
Editor: Muktware.com
Skype: No Way...its non-free. do you use hp-tools (available from YaST, also advertised in the yast printer manager? jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi, Thanks. Finally able to connect. However, it needed the user to be added to be a couple of groups otherwise was throwing errors. I had to add users to some groups. But that did not detect it as scanner. I had to then set-up scanner using Scanner from Yast. I know openSUSE doesn't have regular home users as target, but if tasks like these are made a bit simple, like Ubuntu, openSUSE will have a very huge audience. With 12.1, I am noticing quite a lot of Ubuntu users are trying openSUSE. Thanks for help. -- Swapnil Bhartiya
Editor: Muktware.com
Skype: No Way...its non-free. plain wrong :-) but if
tasks like these are made a bit simple, like Ubuntu,
it's not more difficult, it's simply different. I'm completely unable to use ubuntu (tried) openSUSE will

good notice. any linux distro have it's specificities, but once you know openSUSE you will like it :-) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I will write about my user-case to help users like me. Thanks for your support. Best -- Swapnil Bhartiya
Editor: Muktware.com
Skype: No Way...its non-free. As far as I see this are all insufficiencies in HP's HPLIP software. I do not have a WiFi connected device here to test it on my own. Regarding wireless network in general: In theory it should not matter which kind of physical network connection is used (e.g. wireless versus wired network connection) - provided the particular physical network connection works reliable. In practice wireless network connection is known to not work reliable at least for peripheral devices (compared to traditional wired network connection). Furthermore wireless networking could be insecure, see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_and_SANE_Firewall_settings Regarding WiFi connected HP devices, you may have a look at https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/179464 or various other similar issues on launchpad.net regarding HPLIP. Regarding adding users to whatever special groups to access WiFi connected HP devices: I do not understand this, see my comment "#5" at https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/179464 Regarding "had to then set-up scanner using Scanner from Yast": As far as I know this is because hp-setup does not activate HP's own scanner driver "hpaio" in /etc/sane/dll.conf which it should compare "Third-Party Scanner Drivers" in http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Configuring_Scanners so that one has to do this manually or use the YaST scanner module do complete a setup which should be done completely by hp-setup. I would very much appreciate it, if you could report the issues directly to the HPLIP upstream authors via http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/support.html This way there is a direct communication between you who actually has the issue and the upstream authors who can fix it. In the end it will not work when each Linux distribution adds its own add-ons and workarounds for issues in upstream software which may help in some cases but may fail or even cause damage in other cases. The only way which will work in the end is to work together with the upstream authors to get issues in their software fixed at upstream.
