Re: [SLE] Transferring the stored data from one server to a new one
Hi, all thanks for the advice. I am not so sure how much data has to be transfered, I suppose is everything, email accounts, user accounts, etc. I will take a look today, because they called me yesterday night asking me for help so we will work today afternoon on that. So I am not really sure what is in the server and what should be transfer but I think is a lot of information, almost all. Thanks Jose Ed Harrison wrote:

on Sun, 26 Jan 2003 00:35:39 -0800 cd /mnt mkdir newserver cd "what you want to copy to new server" (but not "/", else you will overwrite the new installation) find ./* -xdev | cpio -pdv /mnt/newserver/"where you want old data to end up"
This will preserve all file ownership, dates and permissions.
Make sure you analyze what and where you want to copy FROM and TO, so that it ends up at the same place on the new server.

O.K. That might get a little more hairy... Being none too familiar with RH, one thing that might complicate matters slightly is that the RH users might all have separate groups... (AFAIK that's the default on RH, which it is not on SuSE) So just copying over the users' homes and preserving group info could land you with some ...well... side effects... :-P I'm no expert but IINM, migrating user accounts from one distro to another, is slightly more complicated than just copying the data over...

What you might want to do, is geet an overview of the situation, and then start new threads for each "category" of the migration. Just a suggestion, but you might get better responses with a subject: for each... HTH Jon Clausen
