From memory, the PERC card has two possible I2O modes: "emulation mode" (the default), and "mass storage". Change the mode to "Mass storage" and then reboot. The issue seemed to arise because the AMI megaraid module does not support emulation mode, when it loads it hangs trying to determine the location of the storage devices. Since making the change I haven't had any issues with installing any version of SuSE (8.2-9.3, enterprise, pro or home).
