I understand you "see the penguin" when running framebuffer console. You can configure this to run with 2.2 kernels, but it's not the default and I haven't figured out how to do it either. You have to check out the docs..I am probably forgetting..but I _believe_ you have to enable it when you run make config/make menuconfig or whatever. Then you have to set it up in lilo.
