Has anyone been using Firefox under SuSE 9.0 or 9.1? How do you set it up to call up an e-mail application's new message utility with the name of the addressee already set, when you click on an e-mail option at a web site? I have tried the extension that supposedly calls up external programs but I can't make it work. dj tuchler
I maybe mistaken, but.... Firefox is next mozila without email, and other stuff... ThunderBird is full fledged next Modzilla (with email)? Jerry On Wed, 2004-06-16 at 20:00, Dennis J. Tuchler wrote:

Not quite. Firefox is the NextGen mozilla browser. Thunderbird is the NextGen mozilla mail client. They are both standalone apps, unlike the all-in-one approach of the original Mozilla. You need to install mozex, which adds this functionality. It sounds like you've already done this, so all that remains is establishing what commands your mail program requires to perform this - for which we need to know what it is :) FWIW, I use this: gemini -url mailto:%a?subject=%s&cc=%c&body=%b The macros above are: %a, destination address; %s, subject line; %c, CC address; %b, body text. Took me a day of guessing to get this. The evolution folks say it can't be done. OK, get the mozex extension and add the following to prefs.js: user_pref("mozex.command.aim", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.download", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.ed2k", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.ftp", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.irc", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.mailer", "/opt/gnome/bin/evolution mailto:%a Subject=%s"); user_pref("mozex.command.news", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.source", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.telnet", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.textarea", ""); user_pref("mozex.general.tmpdir", "/tmp/mozilla"); user_pref("mozex.intercept.ftp", false); user_pref("mozex.intercept.irc", false); user_pref("mozex.intercept.mailto", true); user_pref("mozex.intercept.news", false); user_pref("mozex.intercept.telnet", false); user_pref("mozex.universal.command", ""); user_pref("mozex.universal.schemes", ""); -- Jim Sabatke Hire Me!! - See my resume at http://my.execpc.com/~jsabatke Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup. Pardon the top-post. I have a question about your communication of the proper string to call up an e-mail application from a web browser by clicking on an e-mail selection at a web site. I want to use Thunderbird with Firefox. How does one find/figure out these strings (The writer of mozex refused to my requests for the proper strings)? The writer of MozEx won't keep the commands for all email apps (and ftp, and telnet etc.) to hand, so it's not surprising that she didn't help. The place to look is in the help for the app in question. It might be in the FAQ also. Check the Thunderbird website if you can't find it in the help. Time for you to start learning a few of the approaches to determining what software will do. You are *not* a noob, I have seen you on this list for over a year and, iianm, on the os/2 lists sometime back. This is basic! open a terminal and issue from the commandline: thunderbird --help and see what is required to open thunderbird in the manner that you wish. Then, probably adapt the following which was give you in to answers to your previous request. mailto:%a?subject=%s&cc=%c&body=%b -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

It's more than a string. The way I do it involves two files: First modify prefs.js in the .phoenix directory (I believe that has just changed with 0.9 to .mozilla/phoenix): user_pref("mozex.command.aim", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.download", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.ed2k", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.ftp", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.irc", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.mailer", "/opt/firebird/mailto_mozilla.sh %a %s"); user_pref("mozex.command.news", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.source", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.telnet", ""); user_pref("mozex.command.textarea", ""); user_pref("mozex.general.tmpdir", "/tmp/mozilla"); user_pref("mozex.intercept.ftp", false); user_pref("mozex.intercept.irc", false); user_pref("mozex.intercept.mailto", true); user_pref("mozex.intercept.news", false); user_pref("mozex.intercept.telnet", false); user_pref("mozex.universal.command", ""); user_pref("mozex.universal.schemes", ""); And the file /opt/firebird/mailto_mozilla.sh: export THUNDERBIRD_HOME=/opt/thunderbird/thunderbird $THUNDERBIRD_HOME/thunderbird -remote "ping()" >/dev/null 2>&1 RUNNING=$? if [ $RUNNING -eq 0 ]; then # mozilla is running. Pop it to the focus window $THUNDERBIRD_HOME/thunderbird -mail -remote "mailto($1?subject=$2)" else # mozilla is not running. Start it $THUNDERBIRD_HOME/thunderbird -P default -compose mailto:$1?subject=$2; fi -- Jim Sabatke Hire Me!! - See my resume at http://my.execpc.com/~jsabatke Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup. It's more than a string. The way I do it involves two files:
First modify prefs.js in the .phoenix directory[snip] And the file /opt/firebird/mailto_mozilla.sh:
Or, more simply, just use the MozEx preferences dialog box to enter the necessary values.
