Cups problem: server-error-service-unavailable
One of the machine on my network is running SuSE 8.0 and cups and has a printer connected to its parallel port. Another machine is trying to print remotely. It also has cups installed. I can see the printer, but when I attempt to print, I get a server-error-service-unavailable error. Any idea what may cause this problem? Thanks, Avi -- Avi Schwartz avi@CFFtechnologies.com

Hi Avi, On the Server have you configured /etc/cups/cupsd.conf? This is where you set the permissions that allow other computers access to the printers on the server. The file is well commented and is easy to configure. On all other computers you should edit /etc/cups/client.conf and add the Server Address. -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------
The problem was indeed with permissions. All I had to do was to add an 'Allow From 192.168.129.0/24' line to cupsd.conf, reload cupsd and it started working. I did not have to set the server for the clients. Thanks again for your help! Avi On Mon, 2002-07-08 at 01:33, Graham Smith wrote:

Had a similar problem on a Mandrake box. Suse 8.0 has cups running while Mandrake has lpd running. The printer is connected to the lpd port of Mandrake. Cups kept giving the "server error service unavailable" message. It took ages to diagnose it. Important things to do are restarting cups when making changes to the configuration. restarting lpd for similar reasons. Having the correct server name in cups client.conf file. Making sure the same server name is in /etc/hosts of (Mandrake box) Putting the server name in /etc/host.lpd (Mandrake box)for good measure. Using http://localhost:631/ to stop/start printers and jobs, also printing test pages etc (Suse box). I must have done something right because printing is now working ok. Remember this setup is for an lpd server. Cups prints to the lpd server using its better filters. Lpd has a raw spooler. This sends the file on to the printer without any changes. It seems Mandrake could not give permission for printing until things were correct. It seemed to differentiate between an address (192.168.50.3) and the name of the server somewhere -even though they were the same machine. Hope this is not too confusing Brian Marr July 2002 16:03, Graham Smith wrote:
