once you comment out initrd, you need to run lilo
again. or, if you still want the ramdisk, just run
mk_initrd, and re-run lilo. The important step is
re-running lilo. also, you did do a make modules;make
modules_install, right?

Thanks Ron. I left INITRD_MODULES blank in rc.config (it had 3c90x in it), ran SuSEconfig. Same problem. I left the module in rc.config, ran SuSEconfig, and commented out initrd in lilo.conf and still had the problem:
Uncompressing linux... Loading Linux...
Out of memory
system halted--
I did run lilo after altering lilo.conf. This isn't the end of the world, but this is a low end machine and I figured if I could get the kernel down from 800k to around 400k, it might be worth it. Thanks again for the help Ron.

I made sure to run lilo. I'm not using a ramdisk. I also did make and install the modules. I'm feeling like I must have forgotten to build something into the kernel.
