[SuSE Linux] Upgrade 5.3 to 6.0?
I installed 5.3 as a new user. Since then I have updated a number of packages/programs. For some I have installed new RPMs from the Suse ftp site, but most I have downloaded in source tar.gz form and installed them. Is this going to cause any problems if I then upgrade to Suse 6.0? Considering that the RPM database will not show the version of the binary that I am actually using? - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

When you are installing packages from source, uninstall the RPM of this program first. If you update the system, YaST will only look in the RPM database and update all packages, which are older than the ones on the new CD. If you additionally use /usr/local as the location for you manual installed programs, chances are pretty good for an update. You might get into trouble regarding the library versions (libc5 <> glibc for example), you mileage may vary. I'd also recommend you to make a backup of your configuration files. I have to su root and "modprobe -a sound" to get any sound support. And even then it is limited: CD works, but no system sounds, etc. So I thought about kerneld. . . .I think I am running kerneld, and I even tried su root, then explicitly runing "kerneld"---still no sound other than CD. Is it possible that it has to do with the following from my boot.log: <snip> <4>Unable to load NLS charset cp437(nls_cp437) <4>Unable to load NLS charset iso8859-1(nls_iso8859_1) <4>Unable to load NLS charset cp437(nls_cp437) <4>Unable to load NLS charset iso8859-1(nls_iso8859_1) <snip> -- ~\/*\/*\/*\/*\/*\/*\/*\/*\/*\/*\/*\/*\/*\/*\/*\/~ ~Christopher A. Do you mean that "insmod sound" dosn't work as root? Did you do a "make modules_install" after building your kernel? Did you compile sound as module?, or as part of the kernel? You may have selected the wrong sound card options when you built your kernel. I quess you have to be more specific. What soundcard. Is it pnp? Is it an AWE32? Alot of things could cause this, and those error messages seem weird, as if something is missing? - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

These messages have nothing to do with your sound setup. They indicate that you haven't compiled national language support into your kernel (needed to mount msdos/vfat filesystems).
