Hi all. While I tend to leave my workstation on 24/7, I recently dropped out of X entirely and upon 'startx', I found that I could not get back into the proper resolution. I am persistently stuck in 640x480. Most irritating. This happened shortly before swapping out a Dell P991 monitor for a Samsung SyncMaster 955df. Both monitors have the same difficulty. Sax2 let me set up the Samsung at 1024x768, which is fine, but I always end up with 640x480. from /var/log/XFree86.0.log (II) I810(0): Monitor[0]: Using hsync range of 30.00-85.00 kHz (II) I810(0): Monitor[0]: Using vrefresh range of 50.00-160.00 Hz (II) I810(0): Not using built-in mode "1600x1200" (width too large for virtual size) (II) I810(0): Not using built-in mode "1280x1024" (width too large for virtual size) (--) I810(0): Virtual size is 1024x768 (pitch 1024) (**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "1024x768" (**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "800x600" (**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "640x480" (II) I810(0): Attempting to use 103Hz refresh for mode "1024x768" (45) (II) I810(0): Attempting to use 129Hz refresh for mode "800x600" (43) (II) I810(0): Attempting to use 138Hz refresh for mode "640x480" (41) It seems that the last 3 lines suggest that the driver wasn't happy with 1024x768, so it switched to 800x600, wasn't happy there either, and so finally dropped down to 640x480. Unfortunately, the log doesn't give me a clue _why_ the driver might have been unhappy. CTRL-ALT+, CTRL-ALT- only allow the resolution to get worse, not better. Suggestions? TIA. SUSE Pro 9.1, SUSE 9.2 KDE Live CD and SUSE Pro 9.2 all have the same problem with detecting Samsung Syncmaster monitors. Sax seems to default to the Syncmaster 4S which can do 640x480 pretty well I guess. Switch to a console screen (ctrl+alt+F1-6) login as root and do an 'init 3'. Run 'sax -l' (that's an el not a number 1) and configure. Especially the monitor. Make sure you save the final configuration. Then do an 'init 5' and you should be good to go... until the next time you mess with Sax and you forget to make sure the monitor is correct. Under 9.1 I went and changed the Syncmaster 4S's definition in the monitor DB to the 955DF so I didn't have this issue all the time. Thanks for reminding me to get this entered at www.suse.de/feedback. Stan

I fixed the monitor database so that my Samsung SyncMaster 955DF is correctly detected and used every time I run sax. Checked /var/log/SaX.log and saw it was detecting my monitor as a Manufacturer: SAM Model: 2d (or DDC=SAM002D). Checking the monitors database at /usr/X11R6/lib/sax/api/data/cdb/Monitors I searched for SyncMaster 955DF and saw it thought it was a DDC=SAM413B. Commented that out and put in DDC=SAM002D instead. Logged out, switched to Ctrl+Alt+F1, logged in as root, init 3 to shutdown X, ran sax2 without any switches and it popped right up detecting my monitor as a SyncMaster 955DF and it had all the correct parameters listed including the display size as 360mm x 270mm. Tested and saved, init 5, and all is well. I'll report this back to SUSE via www.suse.de/feedback since someone's database is wrong. Stan

Damned if that didn't work just right. Thanks.
