Thank you to all who helped. Skype is working perfectly now. Amazingly, it works much better on a minimal machine in Linux, than it works in XP with 1 GB ram. That's based on drop-outs. I don't have any idea why, but that's the story. I thought the ISP was to blame, but apparently not. --doug
