SuSE Star Office dist question
Years ago when Star Office 6 first became available I seem to remember reading a review extolling the documentation and extras which came along with Sun's offering. I'm curious, now that every Tom, Dick and SuSE is selling Star Office6, what incentive is there to plunk down an extra $50.00 for Suns version. Specifically is the printed documentation a Sun exclusive? or does it come along w/ SuSE's offreing as well? Thanks -- dh
( Sorry dh sent this direct again and it should be on the list <G> )

SUSE version is :- 1/ Just a disk 2/ NO windows version 3/ NO Adabas database ( or at least I have not found it on the disk <g> ) 4/ NO information on actually where it is on the disk So if like me you need the windows version as well then it is a waste of money as you need to buy the sun version. -- Lester Caine ----------------------------- L.S.Caine Electronic Services

If this is true they are going to hear me screaming all the way in Germany!!!! What is that about!!??? Suse people: is this true!!!!??? Forrest On Tue, 02 Jul 2002 08:14:33 +0100, a large badger frolicked about on your keyboard, and out came:

adabas IS included, read on: You receive a CD, a CD and only a CD. A CD. Is it clear? Instructions are printed on the CD label: put cd in, run Patch CD module (from Yast2 modules|Software). Then something very similar with YOU will appear, select so_base, and so_en packages, and that's it! after that, I looked on my disk and adabas (Personal Edition, single user, 3 concurent connections) was installed on the hardisk in /opt/adabas in addition to /opt/StarOffice So you don't do anything special to install it as it's included in so* packages. Suse PRO-OFFICE == 1 CD only (no book, no support, nothing else, just the CD) Funny, I don't feel bad for buying it, cause now I upgraded my Windows OpenOffice with (fonts, templates, samples, galery) from my SuSE StarOffice, so now it's like I also have StarOffice for Linux AND Windows :) Of course, the package for Sun contains: books, all 3 versions (Solaris, Linux, Windows), support, that's why it's more expensive. You have the choice: buy from SuSE, buy from Sun. You pay less, you receive less. Still, it would have been nice for SuSE to inform us what we buy, to avoid disappointment (have a lot of fun, eh?). Support your Linux distribution! Cheers, Dan. ===== To guarantee the free access of citizens to public information, it is indispensable that the encoding of data is not tied to a single provider. My first problem was getting that to run - once I did I got the things installed ( p.s. Ignore the Size = 0.59MB for the SO packages - a bit missleading when you are looking for large files )
after that, I looked on my disk and adabas (Personal Edition, single user, 3 concurent connections) was installed on the hardisk in /opt/adabas in addition to /opt/StarOffice
Previous downloads of StarOffice had Adabas as an extra package - I said I had not found it <g> There is NO mention of it on the CD Cover so I had not noticed the 'extra' directory was already installed - I use Firebird anyway so it did not actually bother me that I could not find it.
So you don't do anything special to install it as it's included in so* packages.
Installing on the KDE Menu? I've created a desktop Icon, but now I would like to create the list like OpenOffice on the menu ? -- Lester Caine ----------------------------- L.S.Caine Electronic Services

SuSE uses their personal menu. Suse StarOffice is NOT configured to use this one. It creates links in the Standard KDE menu (you have an option in KDE Control Center|Look&Feel|Menu Settings to choose which menu you want displayed). I hope it appear there (for me it seems like it wrote in .kde2 instead of .kde, but I don't know). You have everything you need in /opt/staroffice6.0/share/gnome or /opt/staroffice6.0/share/kde but you have to use them manualy, by copying them in the right place. I can't help since I haven't bothered to understand how the menu works, maybe it's time to study this now - but this is the subject for another topic :) Cheers, Dan. ===== To guarantee the free access of citizens to public information, it is indispensable that the encoding of data is not tied to a single provider. My limited experience with staroffice and KDE3 on SuSE is that the inter-connections between staroffice60 and KDE3 on SuSE sux. With SuSE 7.3 and KDE2, staroffice60 integrated very well. With SuSE 8 and KDE3 the integration with staroffice appears to be non-existent. The staroffice menu that works so well in KDE2 is no where to be seen in SuSE 8 - KDE3. KDE3 does not show file associations for staroffice60 ie: vnd.sun.xml.writer vnd.sun.xml.calc vnd,sun.xml.impress, etc. I spent a stupid amount of time on this issue last weekend before I went to the Sun website for the Staroffice60 mailing list. The common complaint from SuSE 8 users was that there was no menu list added after Staroffice 6 was loaded. This is a problem with staroffice60, SuSE 8 and KDE3. It is a non-issue with SuSE 7.3 using KDE2 and it is not a problem in SuSE 8 if you use gnome 1.4. Using gnome with SuSE 8 the staroffice menu shows up in "favorites" and all the staroffice associations appear in the gnomecc. This actually works out to be useful for KDE. Using Konqueror go to "~/.gnome/apps/" and you will find the staroffice menu that is used by gnome. Copy it and use in KDE3. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? GPG/PGP ID - 0x7A1BEA01
