Pat ol' boy you have no people skills at all. The reason I asked on this list was that it has all the older people on it. I bet that anyone younger that about 35 don't even know what Tymeshare was. Also the reason I'm trying to find out about Tymeshare is that I'm rebuilding my resume after over 15 years staying at home taking care of my wife. Of the companies I worked for back in the early 80's I've been able to only find one. Not sure what the reflevance is to OpenSuSE but for what it's worth...
Not quite maybe.. As for where some googling went: Quoted from http://www.usnews.com/usnews/biztech/articles/961202/archive_035091_3.htm "MCDONNELL DOUGLAS Recent acquisitions: None since Hughes Helicopters and also Tyme Share information services in 1984" So apparently it doesnt exist anymore. I also found this link: http://216.122.129.112/dc/dcboard.php?az=printer_friendly&forum=13&topic_id=66 Looking at it revealed: We have the internet because of Michael Michael (Michael James Riconosciuto). Tymesharing, the early form of communicating between computers over voice capable lines, was named after his company, Tymeshare. He was 18, it was 1965 when his company together with Dartmouth College got two computers communicating from coast to coast. So even if its a bit OT, its still relevant for all of us, as we couldnt flame eachother here without his initial work...

That's right, Tymeshare built Tymenet. Tymenet was one of the five nets that was connected to make the internet. I've been trying to find sometype of address for them to put in a new resume, but it seems that they are out of business. Jim, why does it matter whether the company you worked is now in business or not? I've got four previous employers that no longer exist - they were either bought up, merged with others or otherwise. The deal is I've only wrote an American style resume and I need to make a German one. I dug out my wife's resume (she had a medical PhD) and it has everything about her going from first grade to a copy of her PhD. Starting on 5 January the local Arbeitsamt is putting me into a two month long class for people over 50 that are trying to get back into the work force. One part of the class is making a German style resume. This class will help me with the resume, learning how to survive in an office, and how to use a computer in the office. (Of course I don't really need the computer part, but its the standard course.) While I'm in the class, the company making the class will be taking my resume and looking for companies to match me up with. A major problem here in Germany is that companies don't want to hire people over 50 (I'm 52). So the Arbeitsamt has said that if a company will take me the Arbeitsamt will pay my first 6 months salary for the company. Back to my resume, its been almost 20 years since I needed one and I'm trying to rebuild my US resume just from memory. This is not easy! I don't know how close a German company checks old employers, but I would hate to have them call up Tymeshare (for example) and get "Joe's Bar"! :) So that's why when possible I want to write on the resume what happened to the old company. Between now and the 5th I want to rewrite my US resume. I think that would help when we start working on the German one. Make sense? Yeah, I've seen those - my own only lists the last university/ Fachhochschule I went to, I'm not sure I would want to work for someone who's interested in where I started school when I was 6 :-) Jokes aside - I've worked in four different countries (including Germany) over the last 16 years, and my CV shows it. My attitude is - I'm not local and I can't pass for being one (my name gives it away immediately). If I were to make my CV like a standard Swiss CV, it would be a little fake. Mine (last time I looked at it) has what I consider pertinent information in a format I think is right, with suitable admissions not to upset the locals too much :-) My thinking is - anyone reading that CV will know "you're not from around here and your CV shows it; you're not pretending to be something you're not." - not sure if your Arbeitsamt would agree with my thinking though.

Its always nice to back you claims "I've been a computer tech since 1949" up with proof. No matter if the company is still in the market or not. If i worked 5 years as a CEO for X.co. and left ten years ago, its still relevant if i apply for a position as CEO (or anything else for that matter) in Y inc. As I understand it, they're reluctant to provide much beyond "Yes, he worked here", for fear of getting sued for: a) saying something the former employee doesn't like b) not saying something that would indicate to a prospective employer that the applicant is not suitable. -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Some companies will not give them now, the company I work for will verify start and end dates only. If a supervisor is willing to give a reference it has to be a personal one and not a company / boss one because of possible legal problems if it is less than stellar. In Switzerland they're quite an important part of your job-application, and you're entitled (by law) to a reference when you leave an employer.
