Re: [SLE] help setting up lexmark z52 printer - lots of questions about it
how do I uninstall the old printers? I'm attaching my printcap file. There is a usblp0 in the printer1 entry. What, exactly, do I have to uninstall? printer definitions or drivers? Is there a command line tool, and how do I use it. Should I remove the lp entries or rename the printer1 ones to lp? Thanks Jennifer On Sunday 15 April 2001 04:46, you wrote:
Two things: The drivers provided by Lexmark are just for use with a paralel port. First uninstall the drivers, then you have to install the drivers using a console (none of the graphical installers either kpackage or yast), unzip the drivers in a temp dir and type rpm -i lexmark52 (or whatever the name of the unzipped drivers). Good luck. Guillermo

lexmark has drivers for lexmark z52, but I can't manage to get my printer to use them. Somehow, PPP is getting mixed up in this. When I try to print, the console says: spongebob-linux pppoe[10266]: read (asyncReadFromPPP): Input/output error
How do you set up a USB printer? Yast2 won't let me setup my z52 as a USB printer. It gives a warning about GDI printers and says I should check lexmark for drivers. At that point, I'd already installed the z52 drivers.
Has anyone figured this out yet? I'm on suse 7.1.
Are there any usefull manuals for this type of unix? the ones on the cd dont' seem to help much, and suse support doesn't seem to do anything but send out automated 'we're got your request' messages.
thanks all

I do not have a clue wether there is a tool to do this. There are however two tools that help with that. ;-) the editor of your choice and "rm -r" 1.) remove all lines belonging to the unwanted printer from printcap 2.) cd to /var/spool/lpd and remove "rm -r" the assoziated directories for these printers. Another alternative: Use yast to (re)set up only wanted printer and let printcap be overwritten. I do not know what happens to the spool dirs in that case.
