[SuSE Linux] Upgrading to 6.0 from 5.3
Is there a single source ie HOWTO describing all the tricks, dangers and glitches in migrating from 5.3 to 6.0? I have been watching the e-mails for a while now and just bought 6.0. But there seems to have been a great number of problems and fixes listed I have lost count of them. A single document would be a great idea. thanks denis miller -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
I had been wondering the same thing, and not hearing anything back, just went ahead and did it. If you just follow the standard upgrade procedure (look in the 5.3 or 6.0 manual which comes with the ditbn) it works!! Imagine that!! (I had some very small bugs to work out. . . very small. . .install took about 30 mins not counting stupidity time) So, once again, I was happy with SuSE's product, even though I remain less than enthusiastic about their public/commercial presence. Obviously though, a good product (should!) trump a good image. Lets keep our collective fingers crossed. chris On 18-Mar-99 millerd wrote:

As I keep installing packages over time I find that my upgrade times are going up. My upgrade time from 5.2 to 5.3 was only about 30 minutes. I find now though that a few of my systems are much bigger and so there are usually 150-200 packages to upgrade and so this can take 45 minutes to an hour depending on the speed of the system I'm upgrading. Pros: The upgrade of packages and the system itself from 5.3 to 6.0 went very smoothly. Cons: Any custom stuff I had linked against libc5 no longer worked. I had to recompile all of my custom stuff to use libc6 instead. All went smooth here as I simply recompiled and reinstalled all of my custom stuff. (Note that I did expect this to happen since I knew SuSE 6.0 was based on glibc. This may be a con for some people that are unaware of this change). IP_FORWARD is set to "no" in the /etc/rc.config file and so this broke IP Masquerading on my server. It seems like the gcc packages were broken up or something as I discovered that "gcc" no longer existed on my system after the upgrade. I had to install a "gccfront" package to get "gcc" back on my systems so I could do kernal compiles. Chris Martin wrote:

It seems like the gcc packages were broken up or something as I discovered that "gcc" no longer existed on my system after the upgrade. I had to install a "gccfront" package to get "gcc" back on my systems so I could do kernal compiles.
You didn't have to recompile. You could have simply installed the shlibs5 package and had the best of both worlds. It's a compatibility thaaang The IP_FORWARD item was explained. It's a security thaaang. Yup. gccfront, just like the book/list/suse community says. It's a flexibility thaaang. As I had mentioned in the "Pros" section of my previous message, the upgrade of all my systems was very smooth. The only thing that really gave me grief was the IP_FORWARD thing on my server system. I saw I could have installed the shlib5 package but I wanted make a clean break from libc5 on all of my SuSE 6.0 system. I was successful in doing this on all of my systems except for my personal workstation. I use WordPerfect 8.0 and it only supports libc5 at this time. The upgrade to SuSE 6.0 was my third upgrade of SuSE since I started using it back at version 5.2. The only thing that keeps changing is that it's taking longer and longer to install all of the packages. I keep installing more and more stuff off of those SuSE CD's. It's really very impressive the collection of stuff they've put together on their set. For most of the free stuff I use, a majority of it has been installed from the packages on the CDs. This is a big time saver as I don't have to go out and download stuff of the net that often anymore. I installed 6.0 the 2.2.re7 version on my non-connected computer. I was worried about my isp connection due to the problem e-mails I have seen. The only problems I have had are the kde won't work as it needs a lib and the netscape won't work as it need libg++.so.2.7.2 How do I relink these files up? And if I have to recompile where can I find the instructions to do that? I am finding the amount of info available to be a vast haybale and I am looking for a needle. It is still better than M$ though. I feel that I am in control Thanks Denis -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

SuSE 6 is libc6 (glibc). SuSE 5.3 is libc5. Install the old libc5 libraries from the CD set. I did that to keep my older apps running. No problems. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
