From the POV of a Windows techy (me) this is dead easy with any version of Windows I am familiar with (certainly under NT or better) and yet Linux doesn't seem to be able to do it. Why not? Are JetDirect boxes that uncommon? It's very, very frustrating because I am so itchy keen to migrate everything to Linux but without this relatively ordinary printer setup I can't do it. I have gotten this to work in the past. Did you look at the Web Jetadmin program? http://www.hp.com/pond/wja/live/manual/html/wjacomp_linux.html There are both Linux and Windows flavors of it. I have gotten that to work in both environments to be able to detect and configure any JetDirect device I have ever plugged in. Unfortunately, I have never been able to get the Print Queue Creation to work on Linux. I had to resort to manually doing that part. It is very handy for configuring IP addresses and updating firmware. It will automatically detect any JetDirect devices on your network. One feature we use is the page count. You can set page counts on all of the devices manually. Good for keeping tabs on the duty cycle of the printers. Also, I've had occasion to have to keep track of how many pages we were getting out of some third-party toner cartridges. Here is some documentation on configuring JetDirect print servers. It has instructions on how to use arp & telnet as the tools to do the basic initial configuration of the JetDirect as well as instructions on how to set up a print queue to use printers attached to it. http://www.hp.com/cposupport/networking/support_doc/bpj02836.html By the way, if anyone has gotten WebJetAdmin to be able to manage print queues on Linux servers, I would appreciate any pointers.
