RE: [SLE] strange output from ls -l ???
You think YaST is the only SuSE-specific thing in a SuSE distribution? How absurd.
Is that all you got out of that? Yes, you got me there. Yast is all there is to Suse. (That is sarcasm, just so you know)
But he didn't know that. It was just dumb luck that there was any overlap at all. I can't see the point of encouraging people to ask whatever question comes to their minds on this list regardless of whether there was even a Linux installation within a mile of them when the issue arose.
But hey. Come one, come all. No question's off limits. This is the list to end all lists.
Why is your dander up? If the poster didn't mention that he was using Cygwin on windows, no one would have known otherwise. His post would have been just a question about "ls" output and all would be happy. The question was not about a how to stuff a goose or what the ambient temperature on Titan is. I guess the "ls" command behaves differently on a Suse system than on others. ~James

O-T is O-T. I would ask the same question when people get all hot under the collar about the dreaded "top-posting" style. I don't see what the problem is with that. And if you're going to answer that it's the policy of the list not to do it (and that policy does exist in writing), then the same answer goes for question about software on non-SuSE, non-Linux (yet cosmetically similar) systems.

If pigs had wings... Again, this happened to have an answer that is (mostly) equally true between the environment in which the issue arose and the one in which it was asked, but I don't think vague similarities are sufficient to justify cluttering this already busy list with each offhand question that pops into a subscriber's mind. And the O-P said "All comments welcome" so I told him I didn't think he should ask questions here that arose in completely foreign environments.

May I ask why your mailer doesn't preserve thread links? I think if we're going to have a no-top-posting policy, we should also have a "standards-compliant-mailers-only" policy. Randall Schulz
