[opensuse] old 9.3 question
Hello; Might be too ancient to get an answer on SuSE 9.3 but . . . . At one time, there was some keystroke combination (Alt-F3 maybe?) that would unfreeze a KDE desktop and deliver a /new/ desktop or at least allow one to bring up a terminal to go in and kill an offending or hung process. Does anyone know? Thanks! -- Tony Alfrey tonyalfrey@earthlink.net "I'd Rather Be Sailing" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Hello, do you mean: CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE (Backspace two times fast after another) ? Best regards, Johannes Müller-Lahn -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Perhaps. I will try that the next time the desktop hangs. Thanks -- Tony Alfrey tonyalfrey@earthlink.net "I'd Rather Be Sailing" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Wow! That certainly works on a non-stuck desktop. I will try it when it freezes. Thanks! -- Tony Alfrey tonyalfrey@earthlink.net "I'd Rather Be Sailing" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE restarts the X server and thus kills the entire session that was running. It seems like overkill for what the OP was wanting. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well I don't know if it's what you want but CTRL-ALT-F3 will take you to a text console where you can log in to a bash session and kill whatever you want. (CTRL-ALT-F7 to get back to the X session) Cheers, Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

CTRL-ALT-F[1..6] for a text console? -- " '... but there is so much else behind what I say. It makes itself known to me so slowly, so incompletely! ...' " -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks to Dylan, Dave, Per and Johannes for all of these great tools! Yes, sometimes I /do/ seem to need the Cntl-Alt-Backspace trick but I will keep all of these attached to the corner of the monitor.
