Hey all, I'm having some problems with my new SuSE 9.0 network install. The install went fine. However, X will load up and freeze under a minute. I can swirl around the mouse for 10-20 seconds then everything freezes up. I'm unable to jump to other terminals at this point. The kernel, however, is still purring along. I can ssh into the machine. But killing X remotely doesn't give me back any control over said machine. I've tried quite a few things to figure this out, but to no avail. I deleted the XF86Config to get a fresh start and ran Sax2. Sax2 crashes in less than a minute after X is up. I also tried using my working XF86Config file from SuSE 8.2, but that didn't help any (ie., X still froze). I have 2 devices that are getting different IRQ assignments under SuSE 9.0 than what they got under 8.2. 8.2 had: 10: 2 XT-PIC ohci1394, Intel 82801BA-ICH2 11: 30 XT-PIC eth0 9.0 had: 5: 25 XT-PIC eth0, ohci1394 Everything is the same except for these 2 devices grabbing IRQ 5 (they had 10 & 11 under SuSE 8.2). I'm not so sure if this IRQ reassignment under 9.0 is really the problem anyhow. I popped out the firewire card (ohci1394 above) so eth0 could grab IRQ 5 all for itself, but X still dies. I don't see anywhere in BIOS to reassign these particular IRQs. Not knowing exactly what I'm doing, I also tried setpci -s 02:08.8 INTERRUPT_LINE=11 (11 was what SuSE 8.2 put eth0 at). That went in quietly. I also did setpci -s 02:08.8 INTERRUPT_PIN=11 which went in quietly too. I reassigned the firewire card as SuSE8.2 had it as well, but I saw no change when doing 'cat /proc/interrupts'. I don't see any errors in /var/log/XFree86.0.log either. A few Warnings, but nothing that looks detrimental. I also tried pci=noacpi at bootup. When I 'dmesg' it suggested that I try this. Still no go. My video card is a NVidia TNT2 32MB / AGP. It more or less worked find with SuSE 8.2. I'm truly stumped on this one. Anyone have any ideas? Anyway, thanks for reading! Eric Pierce __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! The first time I tried it, X wouldn't go, so I tried it again on your suggestions. Interestingly, I mistakenly(?) misconfigured the mouse (I put /dev/psaux), and X stayed up for a bit longer (5-10 minutes?). But then it froze up. When I put the mouse to /dev/mouse, it was back to the same old 20-30 seconds then crash. The mouse is a USB mouse with a scroll wheel if that matters. Eric, Might I suggest something, if you haven't already tried it, why don't you do a fresh install of SuSE to see if you can clear up this problem? With as much time and stress you have put into it already, a fresh install about a week ago might have cured your problem. Also, I agree with Michael, put a ps/2 adapter on that usb mouse and see if it doesn't work better. Might be, if you were there Michael, but at this point, you don't know what has been done, what hasn't or changes made to certain key files. I don't remember reading anything about mind reader or psychic in your sig list. :o) I agree that Linux can be fixed from virtually any point, but good grief, after a week or more with no advances, a new install sounds more logical to me and quicker. Of course, you have the right to disagree, afterall, you have written a book on Linux! I guess you could surf your way there after traveling on your motorcycle and sky dive right to his location? :-p Lee -- --- KMail v1.5.4 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.0 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...

Wait a couple of days for the snow/ice to melt here and I'll see if the old 2 wheeler still has battery charge left and just join you there! ;o) Any excuse to take a ride huh? I tried that once. I'm pretty sure it didn't make the situation any better (ie., X still crashed after 20-30 seconds. But I'll try it again. Thanks, Eric P. --- Alexandr Malusek <Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se> wrote:

1) have you checked your "~/.xsession-errors" file for any clues? 2) which environment are you running (kde, openbox, etc) 3) post your complete h/w specs 4) post your /etc/X11/XF86Config[-4] file please -- /// Michael J. 'vesa' in place of 'nv' did the trick! (Note to self... try 'aa' in there someday ;) Sax2 still crashed - it uses 'nv' as the default for my card (regardless of what's in XF86Config), however, after a little fumbling around, I found there exists another Sax2 called 'sax2-vesa'. It simply appears to be sax2 in vesa mode. Otherwise, it's the same as normal Sax2. I could then enable NVidia's 3D acceleration. Who suggested I try 'vesa' in XF86Config? I just spent 10 minutes (to no avail) trying to figure who did. I wouldn't have known to try that at all. Anyway, Michael, Lee, Alexandr & Rumen, I truly appreciate your time and patience in helping me solve this problem. My only problem now is how to get beers to you all. Here's the excerpt -
...cranked up sax2 reset the driver and the monitor. It didn't like my monitor during the test. I tried VESA. It didn't like that either. I reset the monitor back to mine again, then saved without the test. Restarted and it works like a charm.
As you can see, my setup -didn't- like VESA and I also used sax2, yet I still got mine working again with my own monitor. Glad it worked for you though!!! Sometimes all it takes is a little tweaking on the thought processes to look at more options. I just realized that this excerpt about X crashes was originally posted to "[SLE] post-kernel upgrade nVidia problems", SO that's either why you couldn't find it , OR I'm not the one to take the credit (which is more likely). Anyhow, glad you're up and running, whether or not it was me!!! Bernd -- "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders.
