Hi,
To be able to dual boot, you must install LILO (or the multi-boot loader) into the MBR. My user group routinely runs Installfests, and I have successfully set up dual boots with Windows NT, Windows 9x and ME and Windows 2000.
So all I need to do is make sure I have an MSDOS boot disk, choose to save LILO to the MBR, reboot and pray? I did notice that the LILO I have saved to floppy has an option to boot to NT, so I guess it will when I put it in the MBR?
One of the tools I always keep with me is an MS-DOS emergency boot floppy so that I can easily fix the MBR if I screw it up. Additionally, I always use Partition Magic to resize partitions.
Looking at the screen shots of SuSE 8, it looks like it will do all
Hi, it's subjective, but I prefer to install LILO not at MBR. Just set /boot as active partition (fdisk). So if you have Win on the other partition, you can just switch between LILO and NTLoader at any time. -- Verdi March -- On Friday 22 March 2002 22:09, you wrote: the

Can you point me to a web site that details these steps? Phil -- Linux 2.4.4-4GB 9:52pm up 5 days, 4:49, 2 users, load average: 0.32, 0.18, 0.06
Hi,
don't know about any websites, sorry. But basically this can be done
only if your /boot is in a primary partition, otherwise it will not
work. When yast2 is about to install lilo, just select /boot as the
target and we don't need to care for the rest, because the effect is
the same as if lilo is installed on MBR. It's just convinient (and
safer) to have 2 boot loader (plus boot disk for each OS), in case
something happen.
To view which actived partition, in linux, use "fdisk /dev/hd?",
then "p". The actived partition is displayed with "*" mark. Under Win9x
or ME, also use fdisk. But under XP, use "diskpart". Please remember do
not use partition magic to select active partition, because pqmagic
will hide the unactived primary partition. This causes Windows could
not boot (if the hidden partition is Win) or in case of linux, it will
mount / will be in "ro" mode.
One final remainder, if you've ever "shifted" or "moved" your primary
partition (wnidows) **before** you install Linux, pay attention to the
order/naming of each partition. It will cause a little problem when you
use fdisk or diskpart to change active partition for the first time.

You're talking about BootMagic, a program which you need not use, even if you choose to use PartitionMagic. PM can be used to recover from BM problems, such as a number of active partitions other than 1. This causes Windows could not boot (if the hidden partition is Win) or in case of linux, it will mount / will be in "ro" mode.

It won't let me, it says the partition is invailid. I only get the choice of the MBR (which does not work) or a floppy (which does) Phil -- Linux 2.4.4-4GB 11:07pm up 7 days, 6:04, 2 users, load average: 0.34, 0.40, 0.25
Hi,
is your /boot at primary? If not, then there's no choice,
you have to put lilo at MBR.
