[opensuse] audio access for other users
i use to start firefox (or other applications) from terminal, as a different user than the kdm session owner. Audio is off for that user. How to fix? Thank you ---p -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Maybe adding group 'audio' to the user's account will help? regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

All users belong to the 'video' group. I have no 'audio' group. Should i create it? thank you ---p -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No 'audio' group? What flavor of *nix is the host running? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

opensuse11.3 you are right, audio group is in /etc/group but no users belongs to it. Is there a reason for that? Maybe the video group has all access privileges of te audio group? In fact, the kdm session owner can play sounds, although it does nor belong to the audio group. So the question is, why do other users can not? thank you ---p -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

opensuse11.3
FWIW, I have the same symptoms. 11.3 with Gnome in my case. The logged in user can hear sound but su - some-other-user and start a media player results in no sound for some-other-user. Log in a desktop session as some-other-user and they do get sound. I haven't done much investigation, apart from check that volume controls are not muted. I'll check the audio group on my machine, which is 64 bit, BTW. One other thing I've noticed is an obscure message (I forget where I saw it) to the effect that jackd was installed but not running.
