[SLE] Innd and address already in use
I'm trying to start offline news reading with inn and such, but I when is start innd, I keep getting an error that says: inndstart can't bind Address already in use The INN faq says that this is because something else in already using port 119 and to comment out the line in /etc/inetd.conf. The only line that appears that might do this is the one which starts: nntp...... This is already commented out. What else could be using port 119 and how do I sort this out, thanks, Paul ------------------ Paul Talacko http://members.tripod.com/ptalacko/index.html -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I completely agree. PPPD was the bain of my existence for a long enough time I am now bald...err...just kidding. Well, PPPD was a bitch and if didn't have people to help me. Hi all, I'm not a "M$ intruder", but yes, I run M$ on one of my 7 home computers. The reason is two fold. First I have a PP scanner. So far Linux does not support it. Next I write a stamp bulletin and do the layout in M$ publisher. So I keep M$ 3.1 on one system (under protest) as a dual boot system. Now when I upgrade (most likly SuSE 7.0) I'll try Koffice. If I can do my bulletin layout with it I sh*tcan publisher. Also if ever someone writes a PP twain scanner program then I can dump all of M$ and never look back. In other words, what I'm saying is that most people on this list that use M$ products do so only because they have to. Either because Linux does not support his hardware or because of his work. So I don't think that bill is out to undermine the SuSE list. <G> Later! come on people you cant all hate M$ that much can you just because they invade your privacy and crash your computers and rip you off....i look at it as M$ did a good deed to the linux community by all of their bad things they have did...they make their users desperate...i mean so desperate they want an operating system that is more stable, one that gives you 100% total control over your own computer not 40% if your lucky.... one that if you dont like the default way it looks and runs you can totally rewrite it and not have to worry about any copyrighted materials or breaking any laws caus you decompile/recompile the source code.... this great desperation makes the user bodly go where no man or woman has gone before an search for better and in the final results of their search they come accross a free operating system....they say well if its free how good can it be...well to their suprise its amazingley stable and customizeable and just down right good for their needs....and wow another thing...i dont have to pay $50.00 a question or $3.00 a hour for tech support i can just go into a good irc channel or subscribe to a mailing list like this one for free..... well in closing i would like to say.... I don't agree with that any more. If somebody wants to get online with Linux these days it's a piece of cake. kppp has worked for everybody I know and it's just as simple as Windows DUN. However, there are many people such as myself that are stuck with MS products at work. At home I am completely and utterly MS free.

I pulled some hair out back when I first used minicom and edited chatscripts, etc., by hand. But I still ended up getting online. Not to be rude or anything, but regardless if you AGREE with it or not is irrelevant. I notice that about 30% of the questions on this list are about ppp and if there were not variables in everybody's systems then we would be using ROM based terminals and all would be good. ppp is a problem for people..I use to work at an ISP and we had all kinds of calls about getting connected using everything from Win 3.X to Linux. People have problems with it if they have never done it, and it's not always a piece of cake. I am so glad I have DSL now so I don't have to use ppp under any Unix .. DSL setup by comparision was smooth as a babies butt. just my 0.02

Well, what about if one experianced user takes care for a newbe, that needs more help than a quick short answer. This could be done on a "problem" basis, since most of the experianced users are experienced in a few but not all problems. That's pretty much what happens on this list, except that sometimes it is newbie helping newbie, experienced helping newbie, experienced helping experienced and all the other combinations and permutations envolved. That is the beauty of this list! What makes this list different from most of the others is that the folks on this list seem to be, on the average, a cut above the average Linux user. Oh. Well, just about every distro has their own mail list, more or less. About every major project has their own mail list. The kenel development project is probably the most important, followed by the kde mail list and the kdevelop mail list. Almost every aspect of computing associated with Linux has a mail list, and if not a mail list then a newsgroup. I seldom frequent newsgroups because the anonymous posters generally post rude, crude, violent, anti-social and generally worthless messages. They drop the signal-to-noise ration so low that the newsgroup becomes worthless. That is why lists like this are becoming so popular. It is also why the testosterone groupies don't frequent it very often - they have to register with a valid email address, which leaves a trail. People have problems with it if they have never done it, and it's not always a piece of cake. I am so glad I have DSL now so I don't have to use ppp under any Unix .. I don't agree with that any more. If somebody wants to get online with Linux these days it's a piece of cake. kppp has worked for everybody I know and it's just as simple as Windows DUN. However, there are many people such as myself that are stuck with MS products at work. At home I am completely and utterly MS free.
I found that kppp worked fine in SuSE 5.3, and for me it worked ok in SuSE 6.0, but after that it was tempermental -- most not workable. vwdial worked fine as a replacement. Like Ben, however, I found that when I switched to ADSL the setup and install was a piece of cake. I am using a Cisco 675 as a dhcp server. YaST set it up the first time without a hitch. Yeah, I use Pegasus Mail as my main email client-- mainly 'cause my partner and I share the same email account name, and I've got about 5 years of Pegasus Mail archives that I'm too lazy (and busy) to convert, so that I can use mutt. At work, I use mutt exclusively-- it's especially good at unencoding attachments that M$-based mail clients can't do properly. I also use Netscape for Windoze-- I'm taking a course from Cisco over the 'net and it requires the use of Shockwave. I also need 'doze on a coupla of my home machines, as I currently earn my living supporting M$ clients and use them for testing purposes. If I fully had my choice, I'd be running SuSE (and maybe Netware) exclusively on all my boxes. Please guys, have patience. I started with Linux last July. I use a dual boot machines: one at work and one at home. I just haven't had the time to *carefully* read HOWTOs on networking stuff. But let me say what I have done: 1) I ported a program I wrote in Borland DOS C program to Linux. I use this program at work. Had to learn some peculiarities of C in Linux. Had to learn some BASH. All this takes some time. Still learning. I have recently learned something about Python. I wrote a Python script as a front end to another program I use at work. Now, the technician can run the plotting program (which runs under NT) to see the data in finalized form. If I find a good scientific plotting program that runs under Linux, I will immediately trash NT and Win98. Sorry to be still using Win98/Netscape for e-mail, but I'll get there. I promise. I completely agree. PPPD was the bain of my existence for a long enough time I am now bald...err...just kidding. Well, PPPD was a bitch and if didn't have people to help me. I would prolly still be running NT dual booted with Linux..but thank god I haven't had to do that in 2.5 years. :)

BobF, You and everybody on this list have been very helpful on a broad spectrum of computer issues. Thanks for the freshmeat link. I looked there sometime ago, but haven't visited recently. I think I am about ready to begin the switch to KMail and/or Pine. Since my box came with a PCI Win Modem, I am in the market for a internal ISA modem (my wife doesn't like a cluttered desk, so external modems are out of consideration). Could you, or someone on the SuSE list, recommend a brand, model number (and URL)? Thanks. Charles L. Bowman BobF wrote (in part)

If yo do this, make sure you can return the modem, I made that mistake and bought an internal ISA modem that nowhere said that it was a winmodem. But ti was. And when i asked about it, the manufacturer, a name fo great repute from way back when, clue, three letter name, told me it said in the box that ti supported windows and didnt say Linux. Try the SuSE wvdial.dod script - I can mail you the correct one if you want it. Otherwise search the SuSE sdb ****GERMAN VERSION**** as the English one doesn't woek for some reason. Once wvdial.dod is executed it is put in demand dialling mode like diald, except that choosing a connection is a whole lot easier since wvdial.conf can hold as many isp configs as you want. Select hte one for demand dialling by "/sbin/init.d/wvdial.dod start <my_isp_section>". Even typing "lynx www" gets my system dialling! On Sat, 25 Mar 2000, Samy Elashmawy wrote:

HEHEEHEeeee I just love it. Every new linux bos I set up here , is a chace to stick it to M$. It means $90 bucks or so can go to hardware or to commercial linux stuff like esp , applixwear and wordperfect. Not only do you take money from M$ but you can help to siuport there compiting whom are usualy strapped for cash in comparison with M$. Jehh , some still do usee M$ , We need it for our payroll stuff and the bloody oki 4W printer unsupoerted by linux. We allready own the licence (AKA M$ tax) so may as well get our money worth out of it. We have only 2 M$ machines. Legacy so to speak , no plans on going foward up to win 2000. will keep them at win 95 and win98. Win98 is the end of the line here. Now we have three linux boxes. 1 file server , one firewall in tinkering mode , and a mothballed P150 running applixware and xfce to make our sings. Thats three more nails in M$ back. Now the apps are realy stazrting to come out of the woodwaork. WP2000 around the corner.

They're learning something about Linux, which is the most popular computer subject at the Barnes & Noble in Redmond, WA. Actually, I don't think Microsoft employees could do much damage to the Linux email or newsgroup flow. 99% of the OS/2 sabotage (I witnessed it) took place in one location, two OS/2 Forums on Compuserve, back before the internet was popular with consumers. These days Microsoft doesn't have enough employees to undermine the hundreds of newsgroups, lists, and web sites that comprise Linux information. We're like a swarm of bees to them.
