Similar situation to what both John Lamb and Sourian reported but alas
this is in a production environment. Basically I NEED php to be working
like a rock so going to Apache2 at this point in time is not really an
option.
Clean basic install of apache
When I goto boot, apache does not start as a part of the boot process.
At the moment, all of the firewall stuff has been deleted from the
machine just to ensure that this is not causing a problem (I usually use
shorewall so that is ok.)
chkconfig apache after a fresh boot says "apache on"
rcapache status though gives a "unused"
and trying to view the machine via any mechanism (either localhost, or
by domain name or by ip) gives a "could not connect" error.
In other words, apache is not running.
Do a rcapache restart and it starts up with no problems then proceeds to
work fairly ok (I'm still working the virtual servers, lets get it
finding the main before I start on those>)
messages in the error.log under httpd are
[Sun May 4 18:46:26 2003] [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down
[Sun May 4 19:08:01 2003] [notice] Apache/1.3.27 (Linux/SuSE) PHP/4.3.1

chkconfig apache after a fresh boot says "apache on"
Check what 'chkconfig -l apache' says. If it doesn't show at least 3:on, do a 'insserv apache' and then a 'rcapache restart'. At the next boot apache should start automatically. BTW, you can also check this by doing 'init 2' and then 'init 3'. When going from 2->3 apache should get started. it had a on in both the 3 and 5. yet rcapache had unused and the setup isn't working when it first comes on. whilst watching the verbose startup, httpd also gives a done on the boot not a failed. (btw, yes I did try what you suggested anyway (on the off chance it might work anyhow.) The next thing I think I might try is a full uninstall and then try to install the apache from 8.1

Try as root, rcapache start You have perhaps password protected apache and when booting there is no pause for you to enter the password. -- Patrick Shanahan Please avoid TOFU and trim >quotes< http://wahoo.no-ip.org Registered Linux User #207535 icq#173753138 @ http://counter.li.org Linux, a continuous *learning* experience

That's a good data point... even though I know three cases now that have this problem, I have not found a way to reproduce it on test machines... I'm sorry! Could you please try to start apache from an at job spawned from /etc/init.d/boot.local? Like this: echo /etc/init.d/apache start | at now + 1 min (the at daemon is obviously needed; you can check for it with rcatd status and chkconfig -l atd) Peter

I too am having this problem with 8.2 after an upgrade. I checked the settings is YAST2 and it shows apache to start in runlevels 3 & 5. I checked in /var/log/messages and boot.msg and find NO errors concerning apache. boot.msg shows: <notice>/etc/init.d/rc5.d/S18apache start <notice>'/etc/init.d/rc5.d/S18apache start' exits with status 0 -- Ken Schneider Linux user since 1995 Suse user since 1998
