Anothe perplexing problem with 9.3 install -- this time it's the printer. :o(
I know there have been some posts this weekend regarding printing problems with 9.3. Perhaps I'm not understanding those posts, but I could not find a solution to my problem in them. Did I overlook something in those posts? Again, a clean install of 9.3 It recognizes my HP Laser Jet 5P, and as far as I can tell the printer was configured properly during the install. But no matter where I try to print from (e-mail. or a word processor, or a page from a website) all I get is a line of gibberish at the top of one page and then blank page after blank page after blank page. The only way to shut off the printer is to clear the printer memory. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer. Has not helped. No matter what I do I get the same result. The printer was working great this morning under 9.2 before the upgrade. Wife and I are totally stumped and don't have any ideas. Thanks for your guidance. Gil

Perhaps others on the list with this printer will respond with a definite answer to your problem. This suggests something lacking in cups for 9.3 for this printer, perhaps you could try "rpm -Uvh --oldpackage" perhaps also with --force the 9.2 cups-SUSE-ppds-dat, also see if anything in the following URL is worth trying. Because of the "clean install of 9.3" I assume you didn't update from 9.2 to 9.3 but really did a nwe installation of 9.3 from scratch. If not (i.e. in case of an update) you may have a look at http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/07/pohletz_cups_manual_reinstall.html because something might have been corrupted during the update. In any case before you reinstall the printing system: Try to use another PPD file (i.e. another driver). Perhaps the "recommended" PPD file for your printer may have changed for 9.2 to 9.3 and the new "recommended" PPD file doesn't work. A HP LaserJet 5P should work fine with the generic PCL5e PPD file (i.e. using the driver "ljet4"). You can use YaST to change the PPD file (use the [Change] and [Edit] buttons in YaST). Johannes, Sid, and Peter --- Many thanks for your suggestions. Changing to the Laser Jet 4 printer driver did it. Works fine now. Thanks so much. I would never have guessed that the 5P driver was wrong in SuSE 9.3, or to have tried a driver from an older printer. Oh, by the way, Johannes. Yes, it was an absolutely clean install from scratch. This list rocks! :o) Gil

The "line of gibberish" stuff sounds like a PostScript error. We get that when there is a font problem, or a placed EPS file that's toast. I have a HP 5MP and I use the HP 6MP for every OS I have. It is the same, but with more options...and works better. I think there was a HP 6P, so "moving up" to that one should work. What happens when you go to: http://127.0.0.1:631/ Click on manage printers, then the printer, then hit print test page... -- Thanks, George ``Badges? We ain't got no badges! We don't need no badges! George, thanks. I had just changed over to the Laser Jet 4 driver on an earlier e-mail suggestion. When I tested the printer using your URL it worked just fine. Thanks! Gil
