To: suse-linux-e@suse.com I notice that a great deal of traffic on this listserv relates to problems that arise in installation. Many of the people who send such e-mail have CDRom/DVD sets of 9.2. I wonder if there is something wrong with the technical help with installation that SuSE offers with the package. That is, when I get my 9.2 package and have trouble installing it, will it be disadvantageous to take the time and wait for an response from SuSE technical help?

Hmmmm... Don't quote me, but I suspect most of the folks who post on the list are more comfortable just using the list that they use everyday anyway. I suppose I could have called SUSE about my NIC issue - might have solved the problem in 10 minutes, instead of a week. Although it took longer to solve the problem, it was, in osme very important ways, more advantageous to solve my problem via the list. I was forced to think through what I was doing. Next time, I'll know better how to troubleshoot LAN connectivity issues. If I had called SUSE, I may have learned how to punch numbers instead of thinking. Perhaps that's one of the great advantages of a user list?
I suspect the non-techy folks crossing over from the Winworld probably make the SUSE helpdesk team earn their pay. :) Not that I'm a technical genius, but it might be good for us to keep the line clear. :)

I suppose there are also arguments with the SuSE people as to what counts as installation and what counts as operation, for the purpose of determining whether the user is entitled to free advice. djtuchler

To me and others, the installation problem was it wouldn't install or upgrade. Having to find the right incantations didn't make it easy. A newbie who runs into those kind of problems may just think Linux is a pile of junk and get turned off for years, coming back when she thinks it may be has grown up. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ....
